New filter design

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i've used the 2x 8" air stone placed similar location to your video and the k1 just piles up above water surface and doesn't become fluidized as yours. What kind of air stone is that exactly? you mention it being a plastic tube, is it the same kind they sell on walmart / petsmart that says bubble wand or something similar?

i use AV-80 dolphin air pump rated at 80lpm so i don't think that is the issue.

I run the air the entire width of the tank. So make sure you do that. If you dont, you'll get it clogging up in places. Try two air stones.

The bubble wand im using is found everywhere. Make sure the one you get is the plastic version with holes drilled into it.

Mine wasn't fluidized at first either. I had the same issue. But i soaked mine for several days befor i attempted to fluidize it again. As soon as bacteria starts to grow on it, it "weighs" it down a bit. Eventually, it almost becomes suspended in the water, not needing very much flow to move it at all.

What is the size of the chamber of water the K1 is in? How much K1 are you using? That could have an impact on it as well.. sounds like it simply doesn't have any bacteria on it though.

PS: this is the exact product i used:

here is a better picture: (i didnt get it from here, just using the picture)

each of those "pipes" are 8" long. So i used two of them. They also connect to each other.
If they are too long, you can also cut them.

I use 20" section (almost half of 55g tank 48x12x21) with 1cubic foot of K1 media. it fills up about half of the volume when the water is full. I made the baffle this way because it was recommended to me to have half volume of k1 suspended and half volume of empty water below.

Yes, a small one. I finally got more K1 Media in. i ordered another 50L of it. I added half of it to the filter, and after a day, the new stuff became fluidized, but since i now have a lot more in there now, the K1 does not fluidize how i would like it to with the current air setup i have. I will have to change the air from being on each end, to having it run the perimeter of the K1 chamber..

dont want to say 'i told you so', lol.

Give it a go...

from what I know 40/60 water/media ratio is optimal GL
