New member, new build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He doesn't have an issue because he is correct! Compared to his three current tanks, this single one will absolutely save him time on maintenance, probably save money on power as well.

OP, I'm really looking forward to this thread. Good luck on the build. Is the bottom going to be a double layer, with the joints on each layer staggered with the other? That joint construction on a single layer looks sketchy.
Yes, the bottom is going to be a double layer. Also see pictures above. I have placed 2x6s across the bottom with 1 of them directly over the seam. The stand is also going to be very supportive of the entire bottom.

Idk about that, that's wishful thinking union the running cost. I know that when I made the jump for 220 to 450 the running equipment became alot larger,!and the water changes became bigger. It take me 3 hours to change 300 gallons. When it use to be an hour and a half to change 150.

Every aquarium that I brake down after a upgrade some how always ends on getting set back up for some reason.

Well, if you went from a single 220 to a single 450 you would be correct. The OP is going from three separate tanks totalling 300 gallons to a single one of 750. The total water volume changed will be more, but the time and effort will be less.

As far as power use, he could use all his same filtration equipment and use the same amount of electricity. If he switches to a single large pump on his new sump, he will almost certainly be using less electricity than the total of all the other devices. Heating a single volume of water and keeping it warm should be less costly than heating three separate smaller containers, but in this case it is more water so it's hard to tell until he tries it.

As far as re-setting-up the tank that you were supposed to be replacing...well, that's just a lack of willpower. Ask me how I know...:)

Welcome to MFK! H hartebreak have you decide what you will be waterproofing with?

The only product that Ive really researched is Pond Shield. Having trouble finding objective comparisons of the competing products. I keep running into peoples opinions which end up being like a Ford vs. Chevy argument. No matter what the product, I will be using fiberglass mesh on all the seams and corners.

Man this is almost my idea to a tee...I have an old oceanic 265 with the front and back viewing panels are 60x32. Been debating on doing a double panel build like this but having those seems is a little intimidating. Everyone says it should be fine with proper bracing but no one has experience actually doing that I can find. Your giving me some confidence. Love the idea of using biscuits. Any issues installing them?

Also the pockets screws. I love the concepts but my woodworking skills are minimal. How did you do it?

Update on progress. Got the tank all glued and screwed together. Tonight I mounted the bracing that goes around the top of the tank and cut and datoed the braces/lid holders. Even without the second layer of plywood that is being added, this tank is ridiculously rigid. I am very pleased with the progress so far. Also, I think I've decided to go with Aquepoxy 250HD for the coating. Does anyone have experience with this stuff?
