Hey Evz, long time... stumbled across your thread because I'm looking at getting some new rays aswell. Very nice looking motoro you've got there. Gotta admit, I'm jealous mate.

PS, sorry to hear about your toga

alright Steve long time , how's your stock ?
I've had a nightmare few months as you can tell , my main tank got a serious case of velvet disease killed my aro within 24hrs I did my best to save him as you imagine but no chance , i also lost my irwini and my giraffe cat which were both making great progress , i was wounded mate but that's fishkeeping for ya i suppose :(
So i started looking for another jardini but they are stupid money in UK atm found a few 6" ones but they wanted £200 each (madness) I did eventually find a nice 5" one for £60 so I had to get it ;) he's in a growout at the min
So back on thread subject the stingray I always wanted one but didn't trust the evil jar so while I had the Chance I thought why not , my mate hooked me up £80 for the motoro , feeding well its all good so far , glad you like anyway Steve :D any tips would be welcome as you know my ray knowledge ain't vast but im working on it

well as you know, I haven't had the best luck with my last rays (still miss them). Water quality is paramount. Also, with rays and plecos (cant remember if you have any plecs though) know how to make mess in the tank. IMO you can never have too much bio filtration. You might also benefit from a UV steriliser. Also, when feeding rays, variety is the spice of life. Offer a wide variety of foods to keep him interested - hopefully that will limit the number of hunger strikes

thanks Steve , my mates helped me out no end by getting him eating a wide variety of foods in the shop , he was taking prawn and nls 6mm pellets straight away :) , ive took my plec out and put him in the growout because i was worried about it damaging the rays disc may put him back once rays settled in and monitor them any prob straight back out again
I was thinking of investing in a UV after what happened anyway to help prevent future probs i may have , ill need to save up though its broke the bank a bit getting new stock but it had to be done im a mfk'r i need monster fish :D

how's your fish anyway Steve ? What rays you thinking of next ?

my fish r doin real well... i know for sure my jar is no platinum though. He had a bit of a tiff with my last jag a few weeks back. Came home from work and the togas fins were all torn up and the jag missing alot of scales. All healed up though. I'm hoping for another mantilla and motoro pair like I had before but not too fussed. I want to make sure everything is A-OK before i get them

My jag and jar were the same as that for years sometimes they'd swim about together and sometimes there was fins and scales everywhere , im hoping to get the new one a little tame he's in with to foils at the min to try get him used to silver fish without thinking dinner (it'll prob go horribly wrong in end ;) )
I was a bit Para about putting a ray in my tank but after multiple water tests I decided to go for it

With rays you need to be really pedantic with water quality. One slip-up can end badly (Ref: me). My last jag has gained some considerable size recently - which is probably his saving grace but I'm always worried it will only be a matter of time.

I noticed you're going bare-bottom in your tank. I personally liked to have substrate for my rays because they LOOOOVE to dig around. It was also fun to watch them emerge from it after hiding. That being said, I've seen and heard many success stories with bare-bottom setups.

Your jag might be ok if you can hook up some sort of jardini proof hide , I cut a piece of pipe couple of inches short of tank width and used suckers to stick to side of ny tank , that way the angle is too much for jar to get in and the jag can defend it

My setup was bare bottom before I got my ray purely due to waste management from the cats , I was thinking of putting sand in but there seemed to be loads with rays without so thought id give it a go like this , plus I can see the little buggers sting at all times ;)
If he starts to get stressed ill put some send in for cover , what sand would you recommend ?
also im going to do an extra w/c mid week to clear crap from the bottom And keep it pristine as poss , thanks for the help Steve
