New tank & cycling parameters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is park in Huntsville that's full of koi fish. Not natural rivers, man made lakes.
No wonder! It's man made, so I'm directing can help the fish there. Wasn't calling you a fibber. I've never heard of it though lived here all m 58 years. (yeah I'm old as dirt. Lol)
What about a hillstream loche (less than 3") with goldfish? They've been in tank with heater (didn't know that they don't need it) @ 77.9--78.8F.
I know. . .but they're colorful, vibrant, active & healthy. I didn't think it was good to change their entire existence up til now by changing water temp too.
Y'all will weigh in if you think I'm all out of bounds. Gonna repeat testing after lunchtime. May the angels fly with us all.

My sister graduated from University in Huntsville, we went to a park in evening which had koi in it. I would turn of the heater and keep tank temperature below 75, ideally 70.

Hello everyone! Hope you're all well. The Fishy Five continue to thrive as tank cycling continues. Today things still going good & going towards better.I
pH 7.5-7.6
Ammonia: 0.25 ppm
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: about 40 ppm (Still light red, not orange yet). Not checking GH & KH - when I did it was probably wrong (the rest of the reads on strips were off, so didn't use anymore of them)& these aren't in master kit.
I'm planning a new tank for them already. (And check Petco for $1.00/gallon sale on tanks.) Looking to get 20 long for a time; tlindsey said a 20G would fit the bottom of the Petco Brooklyn Stand I bought for the 55G.
Gonna also get a couple more smaller tanks while on sale for single fish or hospital/quarantine type tanks. Good idea ' ya think? Everyone says have backup stuff (from bio media to heaters).
Also something productive to do: cycling another tank & establishing more bio media in case I need it. Now I see why! Like a bread culture: don't want to lose it & start over from scratch.
I am so enjoying the "hobby". It really seems more a life change of sorts with mellowness, discipline, art, & science. My oldest aunt would laugh at me doing a little chemistry for the craft! These little guys/gals are already noticeably growing in 1 week. That's why the rush to get more "fish real estate" ( " fishestate", hmm). And now, I'm worried about goldfish fry since I've no idea of the gender of the Five(I know they'll be eggs first)).
I realized: I'm already in deep. . . .but I love it. Thanks to all in this beautiful craft & thanks to the Fishy Five, my goldfish posse, & my future flowerhorn(s).
: )))))

Good morning everyone! The forum appears to have late morning members. Have a great day & don't forget the Petco $1/gallon sale! They'll even take phone orders for shipping to you. (Well, they said they would; I'll let you know when I try it.)
Also, good morning from all of us here in Alabama including my cats, dogs, & the Fishy Five. (That really large enclosure isn't seeming so wild. They're growing fast since being out of that ugh, "feeder fish tank".)
BTW: Isn't 20-30G a minimum for 1 large goldfish? I may have to buy each of them a tank to sit beside each other! Also I may have 1 female & 4 males; too little to tell yet, but trying to look. Possible future goldfish babies, wow.
Like I said: in deep! Great day from the Goldfish Posse. Tank appears to be cycling well now. Should I still wait another week before attempting FH purchase? Should have another tank setup for use by weeks end to early next week.
Thanks so much & be safe/well!

Wait until the aquarium is completely Cycled and Parameters are all good. 0 ppm Ammonia, 0 ppm Nitrite, Nitrate 5 ppm or higher but try to keep low as 20 ppm.

Yes but tank per fish is not a good idea, it might have enough water but not moving space. 20 gallon is per fancy goldfish and 40 gallon per common goldfish. Generally 40 gallon is minimum for fancy. I think with fancy you might have problem even with 75.

As I understand but may be wrong, they are comet. Wouldn't they be in the middle? Kind of 20-25/fish. Of course they're still under 1.5" . Well, for this week!
I'm ordering a 20L, 20standard, & two 10G in case anyone has babies or gets sick. I don't know how many more I can put in my room besides the 55 & the 20L. Gonna ha e to branch out into the rest of the house. Before long, I'm be like DIY dude on YouTube & have a building!
weird tank stuff today: either master kit or pH specific kit is

Get 40 breeders instead. Those go for 50. If you are looking for dollars per volume of water it holds, don't go by name, 40 breeder holds 44 gallon when 55 holds 48.

I am not sure what you are asking about master kit but if you are planning to buy one buy from petsmart website to pick up in store or ask for price match to website.

Edit: for 40 you can get rack from home Depot, 1 rack can be divided in to two and each can hold 2 tanks, 4 tank in total.

Sorry! One of the pH tests wrong; reading 6.7 with master & 7.6 with individual kit. Will repeat later as
ammonia was still at least .50 ppm
Nitrite: 0 still got to check nitrate.
BTW tlindsey, thanks for the answers, feedback, & likes. I am still adding Prime 1 cap for ammonia, etc. Doesn't look look is I'll be adding to the Fishy family this week. Should I just continue testing? I've been doing it everyday because I assumed things are always changing in the cycle (until they're not lol).
Sat here all day doing stuff for them, kitties, & doggies! Is & our companions, huh? Gonna go eat & recheck later.

Only saying that master kit (I already have) says pH is 6.7, & the pH only tst kit (separate) says it's 7.6.
I'm very interested in the Home depot rack for tank stand. How exactly would I look it up? I'm already getting plastic roof panel for making interim (or permanent) tank tops.right now. Just getting what I can afford, so for real thanks for any help on that HE rack!
