Welcome! Get that tank and take the good advice from this site, hope everything goes well...

Adding an Asin Accent
All of these fish come from Southeast Asia but will make quite a nice display. First you'll put in some white clouds Tanichthys albonubes [6/10] to cycle the tank. Then you will slowly add two more schools of fish. The first of these two schools you'll add some gold barbs Punius sachsi [6/8]. The seconed of the two schools are rasboras Tringonostigma heteropha [[8/15]. Lastly you'll put in some dwarf gourmis Colisa lalia [1pair/2pairs]. Many people only want the males of these fish but pairs of them can look very nice.

Oh, I forgot to answer about the number of guppies in a 5g, A good stocking level for a filtered 5g is 3 dwarf or pygmy cory cats, 4 nice male guppies, and 6-8 females. You will soon have a surplus of young guppies.

The Larger Species of Fish
Alright there are those of you that want fish that get bigger. The first big fish you'll are blue gourami Trichogaster trichopterus [1pair/2pair] There aremany color forms of this fish. Blue (wild), gold, opaline, and platinum. Next you put in some swardtails Xiphophorus sp. [2/4]. You should only keep one male so there's no fighting and less presure to the females. Then you can get [0/6] rosy barbs (sorry but I a scientific name so if another keeper can give it out that would be greet) and at a small size you can keep all the fish to gether but as the barbs get bigger you'll want to thin out the other fish to make a species tank with the other fish. If you get two males and four females than the males will make a spectacular display as they try to out do each other to impress the females. I've still got some more stocking schemes to come but I have to go, sorry.

Hey guys, give a bit of thought to the original criteria, a 5 gallon tank!
A bigger tank would be great but for someone starting out with what is available the chorus of "get a bigger tank" is not very helpful.

why do people say its hard to keep a 5gal? I started with one and never had a prob so as long as after a while of cycling GET AN OTTO they do wonders believe me :)

I don't think that they are hard, you just can't get lazy with it. Over feed a 5g for a couple days and you have problems

I'd say a 5 is cool to start with.....it is after all a start. The 'bigger is better" theme only hold true to a certain point. I'd suggest NOT starting with a 30,000 gallon (of course you could do the arapaima then:D )

Follow the guppy idea. It's a great place to start.

An Afrian Addition
OK for this tank you should put in some krips Pevicachromis pulcher [1pair/2pair] to start out the tank. These fish like to live in caves which are easy to provide for them in the home aquarium. If you get the 55g tank then you'll should put in three caves to minamize fighting over the best cave. Caves can be made by either using unused flower pot on it's side or upside-down with a hole in it or you could use an upside-down coconut shell with a hole in it. Next you will slowly add some one-lined african tetras Nannaethiops uniteaniatus [6/12]. Next you will add some real clowns to the tank, a small school of upside-down catfish Synodontis nigrivantris [5/6] which stays true to it's name for most of they're life. These little guys like a hiding place or two just like the krips.
