New Tropical Pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I gave up on some of the plants that I planted in the water and I'm planting more of what worked. I cut the root bottom to make getting the dirt out of the root a little easier.

The vaccum pump is finally working. My guy hooked up the cables wrong and burt it out.
Here are some night pictures. Sorry I don't have the correct camera to give the effect due justice.

Barmiliad is starting to bloom nicely.

very nice

so what kind of critters coming by now that the water is crystal

Are those Cannas in the bog that are struggling?

I have found they need to be acclimated slowly to a fully aquatic environment. I can only find ones that are planted fully in soil. That soil is usually a soil-less mix that is really loose. I keep them in their original pots and water daily, sometimes a few times a day, for a week. I then poke a few more holes in the pots and place them on a shelf in a couple of inches of water in the pond. After a few weeks of that, and new visiable growth, set them in a little deeper water for a week or so. If they continue to grow, or at least show no set backs, I remove them from the pots and plant them directly in the substrate in a shallow (2-4" deep) shelf. I have also found the purple/red leaved varieties work best for me.

I finally have crystal clear water. We'll see how long it lasts. This new vacuuming system is working great. The cartridge filter is working well. It picks up most of the fine particles when I vacuum.

I need to figure our something with the worms though. When it rains hard they rise to the top of the planter soil looking for air and end up in the pool. They then find their way to the bottom drain and end up in my filter matting. What a mess.

Maybe what I need are some big fish in there to eat them.

I second the big fish. Just nothing with teeth :) or an appetite for samll children. Do you have any fish in there yet?
