I don't coax mine out because they are usually out most of the time even when the hood light is on. The tank is well planted with loads of rocks and driftwood. I've often read that the more junk you put in a tank, the less your "shy" fish will hide. Seems that whiptails apply to this way of thinking although I can definately say this tactic doesn't apply to all types of timid fish.

Whiptails just aren't very timid. Both of mine are very active and almost always in plain sight.
My two spend there time together now. Today I was doing some planting, and found the two of them under a log together... hmm maybe I should consider something more private for them.
Oh cool! Maybe you have a pair. Funny cuz two of mine were geting cozy like that the other day under a piece of slate. Would be awsome to set up a breeder tank and get some fry out of them, especially since they lay about 100+ eggs a pop (If I remember right).

Sexing whiptails is similar to all other Loricariids, the excessive odontal growth happens on males. One of mine has tons of odontal growth, while the original one has none, and never has, but is the larger of the two.
