New years resolutions thread.

Eh I don't know, the old timers now have you to pick on so I doubt my absence was even noticed haha.
Ahh I almost forgot to mention this, my thoughts about fish keeping have began to take a different path as before I was wanting big tanks with a wide variety of fish in a community style however now my preferance is for small(er) species tanks. With a species tank you can really focus on an individual species and not have to worry about whether another species caused an injury or death to the species in question as there is only one and I really enjoy the idea of being able to see how the fish interact with their own kind without any other distractions from other species. There's just something about it that I've become smitten with... I'm also moving more towards smaller fish and tetra species have gotten my interest as there's just so many and new species are constantly being discovered so you have the chance of helping learn more about a new species just by keeping it. The species that I'm interested in keeping are all on the smaller side with exception to my Wallace's Shoehead Catfish so I will be able to set up racks of 20 longs should I choose to go down that path.

I picked up a small group of emperor tetras today as movement for my pleco tank, they are stunning

Species tanks are awesome, really lets you hone in on the needs of a particular fish and breed them easier.
Well, in with the new and out with the old. My new years resolution is already gaining momentum. I searched in all my wifes regular hidey holes and came up with quite a stash.
This lot's going in a box and I'll take it to work on Tuesday. It'll go in the canteen and the guys can help themselves. It's standard procedure at work every new year to take in all the unwanted "junk" from Xmas. I don't share the same canteen as the other guys so it'll be firmly out of sight and temptations way, lol.
I must admit though, getting rid of that tin of Scottish shortbread is going to be quite a wrench, they're my favourite biscuits, unfortunately almost 100% butter and sugar!

Honestly I'm not quite sure as it could be a few things. For a while now catfish have lost their hold over me leaving me feeling less and less enamored over time allowing me the chance to go outside of my usual comfort zones and into the characin family. Tetras are simple yet extravagant, merely a few species are commonly available but when you reach out you start to see the ones that rarely get the spotlight and you start to see just how breath taking some of these truly are. If I had to say which Tetra started it all for me then it would be Bathyaethiops breuseghemi as when I was a young boy my dad got me a little orange fish book and whenever I saw the picture for Bathyaethiops breuseghemi I always was in awe of just how beautiful it was.

Such a lovely species, emperor tetras do have a "royal" look to them imo which only adds to their beauty. Have you heard of the rainbow emperor tetra, Nematobrycon lacortei? It's a different species but has the same body shape and general look but in a different color, they're amazing.
Indeed I am, Hendre, however, it's only because I unknowingly made a series of choices which led me to this point today that have allowed me to do what I am doing. I had no goals of a house when I made those choices but nonetheless by luck they have led me to the option of acquiring one and I am going to run with it.You're working fast! Yes, they truly are and what you speak is the truth, that's one of the reasons that led me down this path. If I can get a new species of tetra that only recently was discovered then by keeping it and documenting my encounter with the species I can help other fish keepers which is something I would like to do.
Oh, and Hendre, your signature "Busy petting my orchids and watering the snake" reminded me of something I failed to mention before. During my absence I've started to see the beauty of snakes that I had not seen before. I've found myself most attracted to the venomous ones but they won't come for a long time, once I get my living situation settled then a hognosed snake is in the mix for me.
Well, the end of January is fast approaching and I can say, hand on heart, that my new years resolution is going great. Plenty of temptation to sink into the depths of sugary oblivion, but I've remained strong.
Not one biscuit, slice of cake, dollop of ice cream, bar of chocolate or any other processed sugar laden confectionary has passed my lips.
Do I feel any better? Do I feel healthier? No! But even so, I'm sure that long term there will be some benefits somewhere, I simply couldn't go on the way I was.

I'm seriously considering getting back into killifish. Spent many years breeding and showing them. They are a lot of fun.
