Ok so if your talking about a 4' window you realize that we are talking about 4' from the top of the water to the bottom of the glass right?

Yep. I'm in understanding of basic principles at work here - and how they work. Water (in the tank), soil and saturated soil pressure, frost heave/depth, water table, etc. I'm sure there is something I'm missing or some interaction I'm not taking into account though.

if your ground level outside the house is even with the ceiling of the basement (prob not to far off) then you messure down from the ceiling to your comfortable level of veiwing and that would be how your going to choose the thickness of the sheet of glass.

It's about 6 inches down on that side, does slope though to a foot, foot and a half down, and using backfill and careful placement it can be just about anywhere we want. I'll have to consult a professional on that. We could use the north side too though, the 25' side. That is evenly about 6" down from the sill plate (normal here to prevent rotting of the sill), but will be more later as we plan on jacking up the house for more headroom down there. This will either require very careful planning or doing the visible pond after we raise the house. You know what I'm going to draw a picture.

I understand all the benefits of acrylic - the thing I'm worried about is that they often come with a 10 year warranty on yellowing. 10 years! I plan to live to 100! I intend to pass this house down to my children. I want something that will last, not get brittle with time, not yellow. Maybe if the benefits of safety, clarity and price make the tradeoff of periodic replacement (as far as my lifetime goes) worth it though... I'm open. It's not the scratches I'm worried about, but that is a concern if it gets scratched on the pond side where I can't buff so easily. Perhaps I could sandwich it between plates of pretty thin glass a couple inches away to account for bowing. Gotta stew on that and google some more.

careful.... she might have a family of 40  KNOW THE DETAILS FIRST

Hah. Geez I'm not a litter-bearing animal here, though you might beg to differ.. Plus if I had a family of 40 I'd be in a lot of hurt.
Ouch. My 2 were bad enough!
A year's worth of beans (if we're eating a lot, but not entirely and only), lessee, that's probably about 150lbs and about $0.50 per pound.. A buck a pound at the worst if buying in bulk for nice clean organic beans. Yah eating cheap is good. I make spectacular chili. Apparently I shall be making more of it. :D
