Lol, very funny, oh boy, whew, real funny Ian, but actually Football is a very old sport no matter where its origin was; Rugby got popular as a public school sport in the early 1800s in England, American football was popular among the English prep schools and Universities in American "New England" at the same time. Soccer or Football as the Europeans call it has been around for many centuries, American Football or "Football" as we call it is based on Rugby that was competing at the time in Universities in NA with a ancient native American game called Lacrosse (a game where you "pass" a ball to other players using sticks); it was the modification of the sport at New England schools that made it more competitive and it gained in popularity to where by the time Walter Camp came up with changing "scrummage" to the lines of scrimmage in 1880, it was already becoming one of the most popular sports in America. The protective equipment that we use in American Football is because of all the injuries that were occurring at the universities by players in the early 1900s; as usuall if theres a problem leave it to American ingenuity to come up with an answer
