Lol, very funny, oh boy, whew, real funny Ian, but actually Football is a very old sport no matter where its origin was; Rugby got popular as a public school sport in the early 1800s in England, American football was popular among the English prep schools and Universities in American "New England" at the same time. Soccer or Football as the Europeans call it has been around for many centuries, American Football or "Football" as we call it is based on Rugby that was competing at the time in Universities in NA with a ancient native American game called Lacrosse (a game where you "pass" a ball to other players using sticks); it was the modification of the sport at New England schools that made it more competitive and it gained in popularity to where by the time Walter Camp came up with changing "scrummage" to the lines of scrimmage in 1880, it was already becoming one of the most popular sports in America. The protective equipment that we use in American Football is because of all the injuries that were occurring at the universities by players in the early 1900s; as usuall if theres a problem leave it to American ingenuity to come up with an answer:thumbsup: ! I like soccer, and Rugby I just like Football better because it uses not only the kick and run.....but also passing and catching in the game. PS since there are so many of us "Americans" on MFK and posting on the boards, if you don't want your thread to be confused with American football, all you would have to do is add a /SOCCER into the threads headline. Cheers!

If you need to resort to the sarcsatic laughter maybe I hit a nerve? It's not actually my thread and if you read the whole thing you would see I don't particularly care for the game. As a predominantly US site I think the vast majority of Europeans convert their measurements to what the majority uses so everyone is on the same page. I see no problem with that, I'm comfortable with using imperial values and it's no great hard ship to convert from gallons to US gallons. However I don't see why we should change the name of our national passtime just because your younger less popular sport took its name. If you enter a thread and see it's about football and not american football you don't need to stay. Comments like 'oh it's not real football' are bound to get a prickly response.

^ im american and i completely agree. American football should have been called something else. Only 2 people touch their feet to the ball in the game!! It just doesnt make sense! I live right next to the Bills Stadium, my life is saturated in american football stuff since i work at a sports bar close by that a lot of NFL players and officials frequent. Ive had this conversation with NFL players and most of them agree, why did america feel the need to change the name of 2 sports just to call one the same thing as the other, then change the name of that? Its nonsense really.

+1 on the whole "its just lame rugby". There are plenty of people playing rugby w/o pads, and its pretty proven that pads dont stop brain damage and only really help bruising so it is a case of people being little girls about it

I love real football, its 100% more fun to participate in, takes more skill, more guts (if youve ever been kleeted you know what i mean), more INDIVIDUAL skill, more coordination etc. The amount of passion people put into real football is astounding, from the firms of the UK (green street green street oioioi!) to the barbed wire protected playing fields of mexico it really is quite a spectacle

I like rugby, just not televised much in the states, that being said love my USA football, biggest complaint I here from other countries is to many confounded rules.

Its not quite like green street buffalo football factory is a bit more true to life (if you've not seen it watch it great film ;) )
As for the passion its crazy some of my mates would actually die for our club sounds mental but its so true , I myself am passionate about Manchester city but death is a bit far imo :D

Oh yeah factory's a good one I own both of em on DVD! lol I've met some football hardies from england once, they were actually tailgating at a Bills Game and said they were here on vacation from Manchester btw and heard that buffalo had the rowdiest tailgating parties and they loved it. Those guys don't mess around, most of em were missing teeth and all scarred up. I know its chilled out a bit since the riots but its still crazy
