Official Off Topic Discussion Thread #1

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Exactly! the problem many of us are having is in the past blatant political stuff was not taken care of, even as recent as a month ago I know for a fact you admins & mods saw the threads where some members were posting flat out derogatory posts and memes about the President, and the reason I know that for a fact is because I used the REPORT button. So you can't say you guys didn't see them. Yet nothing was done. But now a thread that isn't even really political gets locked. You can't have it both ways guys.

Look I'm not going to keep going back & forth about this because that is pointless. But I do want you to know a few things. Most of us here are grown adults, I'm nearly 50 yrs old so I don't appreciate some of the condescending replies saying "in for a rude awakening" or "this is a luxury" or any of that stuff. It just comes across wrong. And the other thing is saying "anything that can be taken as political or offend someone will get you banned" (or something like that I'm not gonna go back and quote it.) To that I say this...Not allowing politics is for sure the right thing, I don't allow it on my sites either, but the way you guys are saying the TOS will be enforced, makes it sound like if something can be worked into making it sound like it is political/offensive to someone then that won't be allowed. ANYTHING can be taken and twisted into something. Its great to not allow political posts, but lets not take to to some happy joy cherry on top place where we have to be singing kumbaya.
I am fairly new as a mod, so are many of my peers.

I for one have never been active on the lounge, so I can neither agree nor disagree with you on how the threads were handled. But going forward we are planning to keep politics out very stringently, so that people on both sides of the argument know that it is unacceptable.

Well you have taken the comment personally, there was no malice there, nor a personal attack.

The ToS agreed by all members while joining clearly states that content will be monitored and allowed at our discretion, so there I can't help you much.

headbanger_jib headbanger_jib I appreciate your honestly and tone of your above reply, that's all members can ask for is the same respect back that we give, so thank you.

All I can say is I guess I'll wait and see how the site seems from here forward. I hope it's still an enjoyable place to not just talk fish (because there's lots of groups for that) but to talk "daily life things" in addition to fish talk with friends I've made here. If it seems to be going in a direction I don't care for then I'll do what I feel is right at the at that point about how I spend my time. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

That thread was an open and flagrant violation . . . it came up in the staff group chat that someone had gone as far as to talk about waterboarding the kids.

Gentlemen, I never said to waterboard any child.

I said they should see a demonstration.
But I can see how this was easily misunderstood.
You guys have a lot to read.

You have my apologies if anyone was frightened or otherwise disturbed.

Let me try and clear the air a little here before it becomes members vs mods...

1. As the TOS are about to be enforced more seriously again as C Chicxulub said, we will be starting to watch out more for threads / comments that have potential for being taken the wrong way...

2. Regarding the water boarding comment, as mentioned, this is a family friendly site and we have members of all ages from young to old, as well as a lot of international members

So while some of the older folks / fluent english speakers get that the comment was made as tongue in cheek, some may get offended by it, so please dont take it personally...

3. While there are a lot of us new mods onboard as can be seen, not all of us have power over all sections, most in fact do not have power over the lounge for example... so while we may see reports / comments we can only bring it to other global mods attention and wait for them to handle the situation...

4. Finally, please also understand us mods are all human too and we are all working behind the scenes to make sure we all understand the forums TOS the way it was set out to be to try and erase the feeling that some threads / comments slide while other more mundane ones dont...

So please bare with us and give us some time to iron out the faults on our end and the community should get better for everyone (as long as forum TOS are followed)...

I don't much care what gets deleted. It's your business. Make it nice for you and your crew.
You have to do what matters for the business most.
If people sometimes take their ball and leave, well it happens at the best of places.

Best thing for business is a happy community tbh...

Thats also why we are trying to make sure us mods all interpret the TOS the same way to avoid large discrepancies between how matters are handled right now and in the future :)

Hey man theres something that you guys should consider. For quite some time now theres a tactic being used that doesnt seem to get resolved unless its dealt with at the source. Members will see a thread or discussion that either they dont like or disagree with and start posting political or outlandish stuff, then get the thread locked effectively silencing the discussion that they dislike instead of just moving along.

I get what headbanger_jib headbanger_jib is saying "Well how we handle such occurrences is upto us mods"

Unless the person who posts the inappropriate material is dealt with or just their comment deleted this tactic will continue.

I fully understand its a free site and our membership can be cancelled at any time. I guess we'll have to see how this new implementation is going to be rolled out and decided how enjoyable the site is moving forward.

I understand you are offended when a topic on discussion is easy to be closed by just making a few comments by one member who doesn't agree with the discussion. What you can do to save such threads is report the posts that don't agree with the ToS, and we can keep the thread alive.

What you miss out here is, for any mod to make a fair and unbiased decision, in a thread that spans pages together is very difficult. I personally have gone through loads of uninteresting threads of vague topics in the lounge to just see to that we can save the thread.

We want all our members to have a great experience as long as they're on our forum, and I am sure, most members here, are not on our forum to discuss off topic issues, we are all here for the hobby that we are so passionate about, and I guess that should make it worthwhile for our members to stay.

we are one of the best forums, with all our members who bring loads of experience and knowledge along with them, but we have to adhere to the ToS, else we are no better than the social media.

Thanks for your input and these are exactly the types of things the mods need to work out behind the scenes...
