Official Off Topic Discussion Thread #1

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He was called out for his initial comment, go back & re-read it. Nice spin, but not reality. Female type response .... means only one thing when I read it. I don't plan on going back & forth over this, it is what it is, and I would hope that member said it in the heat of the moment. I was simply pointing out how those types of comments are probably not welcome by most of the female population here. Not flaming, just pointing out how ridiculous as well as demeaning it was.
He should have explained to more but what I took from it is the same phrase that you should never hit a woman, so you should never argue with a woman. Not disrespect but the opposite.

Back in the good ol days mods like Phil (Oddball) took no prisoners, no back & forth, there's the door, see you later. We lost some good members that got a wee bit too caught up in things, some were/are friends of mine, offline as well as online, but the overall membership got the message.

With Phil indisposed, I am now the site's manager who wields Mjolnir. Phil was ruthless and efficient with the banhammer. Given the circumstances involved and how the place fell apart after Phil left, I am trying to be fair and level with my management of the site. I could easily just ban anyone I see as a troublemaker, but how would that benefit anyone? Dloks Dloks is the first guy who comes to mind. I could have just dropped the hammer, but I was fair and he came around. I figure the whole site can pull a Dloks with consistent and fair enforcement of the rules.

What we have now clearly isn't tenable.

C Chicxulub What you just said above, believe it or not I totally agree with you. I know first hand from exp dealing with it myself for almost 2 decades, trust me I get it. My point though is why basically punish everyone just because of a few problem people. That happens why too much in society these days. If there's a thread where someone says something wrong/causes the thread to steer in a bad direction, then delete that comment and send them a message. Locking the thread for everyone just seems to be a tad heavy handed IMO that's all I'm saying.

Again I do understand. Matter of fact just a week ago in another thread when free speech was mentioned I myself said that a website is a private entity and not something that falls under free speech, and I still believe/agree on that. The owner/admin of this site or any site can run it how they see fit. With that said I simply would hate to see this section either gone, or become some oversensitive area where you have to scrutinize what we are about to post for fear someone somewhere might be offended, that just is getting to be too much everywhere we go these days.

On another topic (just trying to offer some suggestions) One of your mods a page or two back mentioned they had seen a report on a thread awhile back, but they couldn't do anything about it since the section was not one they mod. On my sites our software is IPboard which in the admin panel it gives a variety of member masks with not only Admin and Mod, but also Supermod member mask. That gives a mod the ability to edit/delete in any forum on the site. Perhaps that might be something for you to consider seeing if this site has that feature so you could make one or two of your more experienced mod into SM's that way it would take some of the time consuming work off of you and make it easier to handle issues.

Not trying to tell you what to do, just offering a suggestion that has helped me over the years.

Bravo!

And that's not me hating the Lounge, or any of the people that post in it, that's me agreeing with not liking the direction that this forum has taken over the past few years. I agree with Rob when he stated: "We've become an off topic chan/subreddit type thing with a vague fish theme." It certainly seems that way at times.

This isn't a democracy, and it isn't the United States of MFK. It's a private site that was designed around fishkeeping, and ultimately Li decides what's ok, and what isn't. The admin/mods are simply attempting to enforce that.

No spin. He explained his comments... but that wasnt enough for the masses. Again here nor there.

A big problem is the direction us members took. Maybe it has nothing at all to do with staff and overall site management but the elephant in the room is how we treat each other. Man there a tons of great members that wont post anymore because of the stocking/food/how to police. Maybe mgt shares this view maybe not. Again probably nothing you guys can do about it but i would assume it just bad biz for the forum to have such great members remain inactive because the argument just isnt worth it.

Please no one take this comment and run with it. Im not looking for a long winded debate or drawn out argument. Its a fact that this is the situation for many people on here.

I think it was headbanger_jib headbanger_jib Who made the commend that the discipline is at the mods discretion. Im not trying to tell anyone how to run the site or being argumentative... this is an observation.

The world is already incredibly PC right. Either online or in reality the line in the sand is constantly moving and even though most of us are adults and kind of set in our ways i believe if one of us were to have a post deleted and maybe a pm sent stating why we it would be better received and the language corrected instead of just locking the thread. Is this allot to ask for ? I dont know maybe it is but i do remember a time on here when this was the norm. Either way its just a suggestion.

Hence why no one actually gets in trouble. I intend to give guidance on mass and a grace period before I have my mods start enforcing the rules.

If I can remove the political aspect that we ALL fight over (god knows I'm guilty too), then we can discuss everything else more openly.

I am attempting to be fair. The easiest way to do this seems to be to just make one big thread laying out the expectation, push out a mass blast notification and give a sufficient period of time to allow everyone to align themselves with the expectation.

Surely you all must be tired of the constant fighting as well...?

Thank you.

I hear you loud and clear. Please feel free to give me your input on the suggestion thread I have in the Comments, Bugs and Suggestions section.

The very first thing I want to do is to level the playing field for everyone, and give everyone a de facto clean slate.

I will not be capricious with this.

It wasn't a comment made out of thin air, if we actually read the ToS, it clearly states what content is monitored and allowed is as per the discretion of the site, and that is what was stated by me as well, we are not children to be disciplined.

Really? What was stated was: "I'm sure you'll have some noob, troll like, female type response but I'm done."

I read his explanation for the second comment (Idon't argue with women), posted much later, after being called out, by not just myself, but other members as well, including twentyleagues twentyleagues

If someone spouted off like that in my house, in front of my wife, or daughter, or any other female, they would be shown the door.

The fact that you even defended that comment, Frank, AND brought it up here again, using the term "flaming" to describe the comments that followed his post, demonstrates exactly what is wrong with this forum.
