Hello; Some years ago I caught a large carp. I was using light tackle, a six foot fly rod with at most six pound leader (likely 4 pound). Had no idea what was hooked and am still surprised that I got in in the boat. Took a while. Likely a larger measure of luck than skill. I think it was around 18 inches with a heavy round body.

Hey KK, do they have carp at the end of the world?
I think so... Dad says he used to fish for carp in Victoria, so I assume we have some somewhere.. Whether or not they're native is another question...

I know all over the country we have huge feral goldfish if that counts? :D

I'm off to go find out some things about carp in Australia... I'll be back, hopefully with information. :)

So,they are strictly a sport fish, not for eating?
Strictly sport in the UK mate we look after our carp so it can live to fight another day :) they do eat carp in some countries though EAstern Europe seem to be OK with it , I think it was an old tradition to eat carp at Christmas in the Czech Republic, as for baits there's various ways to tempt a carp in wild carp (not from a fishery) with live off naturals so earthworms , muscles , bloodworm , maggots etc are a daily part of there diet , as for fishery carp they tend to prefer man made baits like pellets and boilies firstly because they are fed these all year round buy fishery owners and because the smell tempts them in from long range

never tried eating them, I am told if you are going to eat them to cut their tails off while alive and let them bleed out in the water. other wise they taste realy fishy/gamey, again have heard never tried. I also hear slugs make excellent bait for them.
I can't imagine that a fish that spends half its day grubbing about in slit on the bottom of lakes and rivers can taste nice tbh pops , slugs would work but worms or maggots are better

Apparently we have invasive European carp everywhere but in the Northern Territory. Idk if that includes Tassie or just the mainland... I think it would be cool to see a huge carp that wasn't orange or yellow. :D

There must be predatory species over your side of the water to keep carp breeding under control lol everything's got teeth :) very high water temps will promote spawning a lot more though and growth , that's why in countries like France and Spain carp grow to ridiculous sizes.
I'm off to France next October for a weeks carp fishing the lake I'm going to has them in excess of 70lb which smashes my personal best in UK at 24lb lol I can't wait carp heven for a week , it didn't go down too well with my Mrs tbh but hey not much does hahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahahahhaha

I'd like to go Asian carp fishing here with a bat... They're coming up the Mississippi and screwing up everything. We have electric fences by my house to try to keep them out of the great lakes.

Apparently they ruin everything here as well. Not good for the ecosystem at all..

They are making carp herpes to control the aussie population:p

When i lived in the UK float fishing with maggots was best :D
