Some will always choose to look through a lens of fear and judgement. They're not viscous cranky predators, nor are they harmless stuffed teddys to play with. I don't expect my 2 year old lab mix to babysit my 5 year old kid who's half the dog's size, but they do play together with me around and run and wrestle and have fun. Both learn what is ok and what is not ok with each other. And my 5 year old already knows not to approach a dog he doesn't know without stopping several feet away and asking the owner first, then proceeding slowly and respectfully to the dogs side and letting it sniff his closed hand before petting it. But by this point I'm either preaching to the choir or talking to a brick wall, not converting anyone today...
