Okay so I picked up some juvie Retic's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I tried and the pics didnt turn out very good, the pink is more white. I have seen the other pics of ammonia burn and such and I'm of the school of thought that maybe they are aggitated by the play sand. I removed as much of it as I could without removing all of the water in one w/c. I will do another water change and remove the rest of the sand tomorrow. As for the fungus on the tail and claspers? Any suggestions on how to begin treatment for that?

Salt, Heat and optimal environment should clear up that fungus issue. When we imported and saw fungus stingers quite often, we would use a bottle of methylane blue and actually put it in the water and target spray/medicate the white cottony area until it was 'died blue'.. repeated this treatment over and over until the fungus went away. Some people would say a light dose of mela/pima, some would say not.. just don't do a high dose and make sure you have alot of 02..

The substrate is the problem.. if you see shiny little glass-like flex, it has silica.. crushed glass is no good for their disc, gills, etc..

The rays acquire these fungus on the tails for a few reasons.. When they get caught in SA and put in a glass box, their instinct is to attempt to escape, so they end up climbing the glass and 'bobbing' up and down on their tail in an attempt to escape... This also happens when you have a bad silica irritating them. The other issue is retics long tails will sometimes stick up out of the water during export/import, and depending on how they are packaged, the dryness of the tail leads to fungus - Happens all the time with antenna rays.

Hope that helps,
Miles

Hey, I hope everything's going better today.

Thanks for the info miles. I was kinda hoping you would chime in today while I was away. As for the Pima fix I was kind of thinking do the normal dosage of 5ml per ten gallons or is this what you would call a high dosage? I chose pima for the bacterial combatants, as some say a bacterial infection could be the reason the smaller ray isnt eating. I have removed most of the sand and will be doing another 20-30% water change shortly and vacuum out the remainder of the sand asap. Why would some say not to use pima/melafix? J/w.

I have also started to notice some white stringy waste, almost pasty. I believe this is indicative of a bacterial infection, or is that incorrect?

white waste can be a sign of infection, parasite, or just the normal color if ur feeding shrimp or smelt...

i would prazi just to be on the safe side... u can salt and prazi at the same time.

this wouldnt have happened if u would have got some motoros:) just kidding...

nice rays! Good Luck!!!!!

Thanks Vamp. I know the motoro's would have been a much smarter decision. Wound up fighting tooth and nail with my wife over it actually. :nilly: She liked the cheaper route:ROFL: which now that I've spent loads of $$$ on my aquatic medicine chest doesnt compute so well does it? I have purchased Jungle's parasite clear tabs, they contain Praziquantel and I would assume that is the main ingredient in prazi-pro? I have an email out to the people at jungle to see if this product contains any copper, and if it is safe for my Rays. Any insight or info would help alot at this point. I havent dosed the tank with anything other than salt at the moment, and 99.9% of the play sand is gone. I will do another 20-30% w/c this evening and hopefully by then I will have recieved some info on which to treat first etc.

Thanks again guys.

I did the water change, removed the rest of the sand, and added the recomended dose of Pimafix, since the salt has been diluted I will do another W/C tomorrow morning to dilute the salt a little more and then dose with Parasite clear. Does this sound like a good game plan or is something wrong with this train of thought??? Oh and I added another airstone.
