Okay so I picked up some juvie Retic's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would get some black worms and pack them full of food until you get the fungus treated first.. when they put on some weight and seem to be a bit more stable, then treat for parasites.. rays can live with parasites for quite a while especially if you are 'free-feeding' live foods like worms. Its better to let them be stable healthy eaters and have good water parameters and no other underlying issues, then you will be less likely to have issues when doing a parasite dose..

I hear its also good to 'fast' during parasite treatments (ive seen this with reptile treatments?) as you want to clear the intestines of any food sources for the parasite and allow the medications to complete clear and eradicate.. I would feed up until the day of treatment and then dose with a 4x dose of Prazi and not feed for 3 days.. then repeat the cycle as many times as I felt was necessary..

Thanks Miles your knowledge is greatly appreciated!

why does everyone say to do a 4x dose instead of the recommended dose on the bottle?

I dunno seems a bit extreme to me personally. I will probably just start with the recommended dose and if there are no result then maybe step it up a notch. Maybe miles was talking about 4 treatments at recommended dosage?

The firs few pix are of the male who eats very little, and the last few show the increase in the spots on the disc of the larger female.
Man It SUX posting pics of sick rays:(

How much salt is in the tank? IF you are full dose on the salt and have seen NO improvement of the fungus I'de use an Anti Fungal med.

IF I remember correctly Triple Sulfa seems to be the one that's highly recommended for rays.

Not trying to be negative but it really looks to me like you need to act fast. I didn't and I lost my best looking Marble because I sat and waited for someone to suggest how to fix my situation rather than just taking action.

I'de be feeding medicated food and treating for Fungus at the same time.

As far as the 4X dosage..... I've never second guessed it. The guys recommending this have no reason to lead you astray and have probobly kept rays twice as long as most of us here. I'de feel confident in thier recommendations.

Okay I changed directions. The overnight with pima heat/salt didnt do much good if it did any at all. So I ran some carbon for a few hours and did yet another LARGE w/c. Did some research and dosed the tank with API pro series FUNGUS CURE. Victoria Green 3 mg, and acriflavine 30mg. I went with the dosage on the box. I couldnt find anything negative about the acriflavine on MFK so hopefully tis will do the trick fr the fungus and get me over the first hurdle.

I figured I'd give a little update. It seems the fungus is retreating after the fungal meds. I put a call in to api and we both seemed to agree that if the fungus seemed to weaken after 12 hours do a water change and go back with the salt. The rays were obviously stressed by the acriflavine and given the smaller ones state a extended period of exposure to the meds could have been fatal. I have since done another LARGE w/c and added a ac 110 that was cycled in a 110 high that was kinda just a resident for moral support in my oscar tank. I went with 1.5 lbs. of salt and jacked the heat up to 86 and we shall see what awaits these guys tomorrow. They both are still eating (the female has shown no signs of losing her appetite) and the male has lost his tail almost all the way to the stinger but the fungus on his tail has thinned out ALOT. I saw a pic of a mature leo this week with half her tail (I wonder if fungus claimed it) Hopefully they will pull through. Thanks guys.

Not much to report today other than when I turned my lights off in my bedroom last night there was a big ball of black worms, and this morning when i got up they were gone. The smaller male still has a decent amount of fungus on his tail but the spots on the female are slowly dissapearing (very slowly). Also I have noticed the same thing that matt and ashley have going on with their rays about the disc being lifted off of the surface of the glass. I'm not really sure what to contribute this too at this point seeing as the tank is bare bottom now. Obviously that is the least of my worries at the time and I'm just happy to hopefully be able to keep the female. Of course the male pulling through would be nice but I'm not going to get my hopes up too much. I have given them the best treatment possible and I guess I have learned my lesson.

Cheap rays + meds and time invested = way more than the motoro I should have bought in the first place. Whens your female due vamp?:naughty:

not sur when she got knocked up, but shes gettin big quick...:nilly:

did anyone say anything about this fungal med being ray safe? it might be irritating the rays... causing the curl...
