Opinions on adding a Flagtail

He's doing great MrsE88 -- growth rate seems to have leveled off a bit, maybe only about 1" in the past 4 months (though he does seem to be 'taller'). Not sure if the slow down is temporary or more like it's going to be from this stage, will let you know in another 3-4 months Good luck with your projects, hope to see a Flagtail in there somewhere.

Owner was looking to rehome, and in his ad stated: "I have one XXL Flagtail, at least 14" long, and thick, healthy fish, lives on NLS food. She will need to have a large home, currently lives in a 220 gal tank, but should be larger."

No idea on the age, but I believe that tank is a 220 Marineland, which is 72"Lx24"Wx30"H, so I don't think that the owner was exaggerating when he said the fish was at least 14" long.

I agree. If that’s a 6’ tank I’d be more inclined to believe it’s 16”+

How long do you guys think it could live in the 125 ?

I did see that in past posts on here some were saying theirs hit 18”.
Getting close to that size I’d be looking at a 24” x 6’-7’ tank. If that would be too small then I’d have to rehome. Growth is slow after they hit 7”, isn’t it?

But while it’s small my 18” x 6’ would be its home till it can be in the pond.

Does that sound reasonable, or not worth it?

MrsE88 I have a 5” flagtail in a 15g and it’s doing great. They are considered semi aggressive fish. Have a separate tank ready since terror cichlids tend to get territorial. My 2” flowerhorn didn’t like my 5” flagtail in a 100g so now he’s thriving in a 15g.

Don’t worry about it growing to a foot. Most people will pay good money to obtain foot long flagtail from you. 125 is sufficient for a flagtail.
