Ordering New 440/480 any advice?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont think 10x turnover is unreasonable at all. What size drains are you planning again? If youre shooting for 4800+ gph you might want to go with 2" drains.

Not sure going to guys shop next Friday,

he’s talking about two 2100gph pumps - maybe 7x’s turnover per hour? math ?

thanks for input all!

It won’t matter with 3/4 inch returns and that one pump he’s going to get no where near 3000gph. It’ll be around 1500 at best. For 3 to 4 thousand gph should run 2 2 inch siphons and 2 inch return plumbing

different tank, that one was from FTD...

Good to know FTD did not have my GPH intrests at heart....

so no confusion-

started at American Aquarium’s 440g 8’x4’x2’

then FTD with Similar footprint but 28” tall - 550 gallons

Now , Local guy willing to bring in my house and set up.... (was turned down 5x’s by various LFS and moving companies)
Getting 8’x4’x30” - costs considerably more but....

Ya - thanks all for seeing me thru the ordering process!

Do you have something against the Jeabo pump? I have used them for years and have never had a problem I also use their wave makers and never had a problem. For what you pay for the other pump you could probably get the Jeabo cheaper. And it’s adjustable from 30- 100% of its flow. I’m going to use that for my return home and I’m also using one for my algae scrubber. $150 for an 18,000 Lph adjustable pump is not bad And I think you get the 20,000 for under 200. They also have a very good head height

You can attempt to achieve 10x turnover rate with your return pump(s) but it is completely unnecessary and inefficient. 3-5x is adequate in most freshwater aquariums. If you want more flow in the tank you can use a couple wavemakers or a closed loop pump.

I dont see the advantages in using wavemakers or another closed loop...thats just more equipment, more fittings, more plumbing, more wires and junk in your tank....more expense. 2000gph+ powerheads do not come cheap and all of that extra equipment starts to add up on the power bill as well. If anything i see nothing but disadvantages...
