oscar getting hith in good conditions, help??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
:( hope he gets better soon, all the best of luck curing him.

Thanks:D

ok in the pictures you can see the sensory pits, but my question is about the 3 on the top of the head because they are so sunken in, and his nostral erosion, what do you guys think?

The last picture is to show off my beautiful oscar. :headbang2

yeah looks like the very beginning stages of HITH to me, but since you caught it so early as long as you can find the source and fix it, it should be able to heal in a little while and not leave any permanent scarring

and Goestonemoa, if you still have all those oscars in a 90g then they probably do all have HITH, there is no way you would be able to keep nitrates under control in that size of a tank with that many larger oscars even if you had like a continuous drip water change system or something

yep thats what i thought. i check the temp which is 82F, and all the cords and electrical stuff checked out fine. i ordered a larger piece of driftwood which shipped today and i should have it by wensday and found a real timer that actually works, so i will start using that tonight. lol I have a container of jumbo red worms and wax worms that i will start feeding, and i turned down the heater. Anything else at this point i should do?

I agree with Sarah. Looks like HITH.

Along with varying his diet a bit, you could try Vitachem. Soak his pellets in vitachem before feeding. That should round out his diet nicely and replenish any nutrients he might be lacking.

I would also reduce the Temp a bit... 76-78 degrees Farenheight or so. It may help slow the progression of the HITH.

it seems like they are sensory pits bc of how symetrical they are

They are sensory pits. HITH is known to erode the sensory pits and in early HITH, the signs might be quite subtle. These pics show deep sensory pits with obvious depressions and even nostril erosion.

IME, this is definitely how HITH starts out.

intersting.... thanks

+1, the symmetrical circular holes are the sensory pits but the HITH is where the depression is in the middle of his head and the erosion around his nostrils, but like i said before its not that bad so as long as you nip it in the bud now it should heal over just fine, some oscars are just really prone to getting it even when their conditions are good while others can live in tiny 20g tanks for years and never show a single sign of HITH even when they are totally stunted

Thanks guy, I found out last night I wasn't using carbon, so that checks that one off the list. I hooked up a timer and lowered temps and fed him some worms and wax worms. Thank you everyone for all the help, I will keep everyone updated.
