Personal preference comes into play here, but having detritus trapped in your filter isn't any worse for your water than having it float around the tank. At least if it's in your filter you don't have to look at it.

So are you saying that you keep detrius for long periods of time in your tank, because as long as you don't see it you don't care about it.:screwy: My personal peference is to clean my mechanical media on a weekly basis.

That's a strong statement... BB lives everywhere.

Not a hard statment to back up, with weekly cleaning of my mechanical media

Posting on this forum has used more energy than overfiltering (does that exist?)

No it hasn't, and yes it does.

For each and everyone of you that claim there are no disadvantages of over filtering, why not go out tomorrow and buy another filter to add on your tank? Oh wait, that would be a waste of time and money because your tank doesn't need it, so you all will agree that at some point there are drawbacks to overfiltering.

While I agree that there are far greater wastes of energy than over filtration, we can all do our part. I find it disappointing that we all have the attitude that our actions have no affect on the people around us.

Nobody is saying our actions don't affect those around us. I'm saying that objecting to over filtration on the basis of energy consumption harming the environment is a bit far fetched. Yes, there is a definable effect of plugging in an extra filter... on the scale of everything else you do during the day though, it basically amounts to squat.

I feel like I'm about to turn into a 3 year old here .. uh huh ... perhaps you don't understand the full complexity of posting on the forum... for instance I assume that you are only under the consideration of the fact that it only takes your computer to do so... Wrong ... it actually takes your computer... your (if you have one) router.. your modem...your telephone company or cable company which is giving you your wonderfull access to be able to use the modem, your isp's servers modems routers firewalls and anything else that they have running to keep you online... And the servers which house this forum.... Care to debate what the electrical consumption is for all of these vs your Filter?

All this so that you can talk about your fish...at least the filter saves lives!!! lol Over filtration doesn't exist ... Reason being that if your only providing enough filtration to keep up with the bio load of your tank you are way more likly to have a filter crash. As your "Just enough is good"filter system starts to age it will slow down, impellers wear out motors get old and weaker impeller shafts get scratched and less effective, So while your out buying a new replacement part or filter... we "over filtered guys" are just turning up the flow rate on ours.

I'm not saying that it's in everyones best interest to have these huge filtration systems running... it is however a more economical way for us to upgrade our stock... and tanks in the future... which lets face it ... we all do! Personally I like to know that I have that extra power to be able to take that impulse buy from the LFS...And god knows we all do it, will do it, or have done it.

OH and P.S. Just for you Power Consumption guys ... an Aquaclear 20 uses exactly the same amount of power as a Aquaclear 70 6Watts... just so you know ;)

I feel that it is important to provide the best care possible for your fish if you choose to keep them. Filtration is a necessity, as are lights and heaters. I just think that it is important to realize that the actions that we take have greater impacts that we may realize.

Last year for one of my environmental classes (I'm currently studying to Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan) we took this test to see our effect on the environment.

I am by no means a model in energy consumption but I have taken some steps to lessen my impact.

No... but thanks for being ignorant with your little crazy person smiley. what I AM saying is that I prefer my fish-poo to remain in the filter, rather than in the tank, but that where the poo resides, does not make any difference to water quality, provided you follow the same poo removal schedule whether it's in the tank, or in the filter.

Why not take the money you are about to spend to over filter and give it the one of the children's hunger funds. Giving to these charities is as easy as ordering an unnecessary filter online.

Alright, you got me on the posting(even though if I didn't post the only difference would be my laptop and router...the other stuff will stay running), and I guess when you look at it, over filtration doesn't exist. Since it's the bacteria that are actually doing the work, you can't grow more than you can feed.

I'll call it over spending instead.
