over filtration is a good thing

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

I do get it now:) All of that extra bio-media and flow is a waste because it's not doing anything lol.
:) Guess 4 Emp. 400's, 2 XP2's, and an old 304 are just WAY too much bio and mech. for my little 'ole 125 huh?
Nevermind I have not lost any fish in the last 2 years except the ones that I wanted to leave :D
Funny thing too. My electric bill (fossil fuel usage), has not really increased due to that fact. My kids kids use more fuel than the fish and tank.
Maybe my local utility gives me a break for being an environmentally concious fish keeper helping to save the world's fish species from global warming. (then we wouldn't even need heaters would we?)

I do have enough, but I figured it couldnt hurt to add to it since I'll be pumping water through the UV.

I guess your running exactly what you need and not over doing it at all huh ...:screwy: So I take it you think that yours is special from everyone elses?

Never installed it. I ran the UV by itself for about 2 weeks, then removed it too.

I'm trying to find where I said it was a bad thing to over filter. Can't find it.

I'm just saying it's not necessary.

Here is what I'm basing my opinion on.

135g. 1 XP3 and a sponge filter

300g. 55g sump, 3x turnover rate
jarnewtank.jpg

265g 75g sump, 2.5x turnover rate.

I've never been able to get a positive ammonia reading, even after feeding. I could bump the flow rate up to 10x, but why should I spend the money?

The same reason we all do selfish things we want to with our money. I don't think the thread is about finding something better to do with your money in terms of humanity. Why didn't you give the money you spent on your internet connection to charity? Because you wanted the internet connection.

hahahaha thats true

Pics. to back your statements?.................. priceless and slammin'

But you have the flexablity to do so... we are talking about people who have only the bare min for there tanks... example someone with a 50 Gallon and an AC50 on it .... if they have a heavy bioload in their tank then they are screwed with only that filter. I think we have different ideas of what being over filtered is....

I beleive that being over filtered is having a filter system which exceeds the amount needed to maintain good water quality, regardless of if your using that total power to filter your system or not... if the flow controls are turned down you still are over filtered by having the ability to turn the flow up (without having to purchase or install more equipment)

I'm assuming that you beleive that being over filtered means that your using all of your flow when you could cut back and maintian the same water quality...

I Agree with you on that to some extent... There are some filter systems where the flow control simply does not cost you more or less in power consumption...AC110 HOB is a perfect example of that... it makes no difference where your controls are set .. it costs the same to use it because you don't control the impeller speed...its always working at the same consumption level

I think we're thinking the same thing, just saying it differently. My idea of over filtration goes over what is adequate and redundant.
