My female zonatus, her mate died upon entering the same tank. She barely ate, I later added 5 rainbow cichlids and 4 bluegills. She still picks at food sometimes. If the other fish weren't in the tank, I think she would still hide and not move most of the time.

I personally think it is not a fish that gets over hyped, but rather the "rare location and collection point" It makes the fact it is the same damn fish overlooked...

Not so much over-hyped as over-stupid! Who thinks up this stuff? Especially the glow in the dark gravel

As for fish - Would have to go with Discus for over hyped fish.

Every "sect" of the hobby has its fads. For CA cichlid keepers it changes regularly, yellow head la ceiba, then beani, ornatum, i don't what the current have-to-have cichlid is. For cichla keepers it was fogo, then intermedia. Etc Ect...

No doubt. Some of the store bought decor is complete non-sense. It is expensive too. Pastel colored gravel is a crime against humanity.

Oscars, everytime I tell people I have aggressive fish they always say, "You should get Oscars, they are the meanest fish".

Oscars do suck. Every redneck I know loves Oscars. Not to say everyone that loves Oscars are rednecks, I am just saying....

I somewhat agree. I like and have clown loaches, but I do not understand the price of big ones. I have 3 that are 3-4" that I bought them a year ago for $4 each. At +7" they get ridiculously expensive.
