Sooo damn true....I get critized all the time for keeping a pacu.....I generally laugh at those people.....

you learn to ignore these kind of people. they are just speaking from inexperience and probably dont have the dedication to raise a pacu. :)

Let's eat each other's lips so our teeth are always showing, then we will eat all five of the filtration devices that keep us alive...

Great pictures and fish.

You really decorate your tank well. Do you still have the other fish in it?

Thanks! my husband gets most of the credit for the physical work - I'm the supervisor and 'creative consultant'. After our tank crash of 2006, we lost everything but the 2 ID sharks, plecos, and a handful of Africans. We did replace the Black Aro, the Marble Cat, the Tilapia, and the Tin Foil Barbs. The African population is back up to a couple hundred. The only thing we haven't decided on yet is another Pacu.

Looking at all the great pics here....I wish I would have gotten more....specially when my hubby was inside the tank doing maintenance...the pacu would let himself be petted and hand fed.

I love Pacu!!! Ours was 28 years old and 40+ pounds when he passed away, and it was like losing a member of the family...Liz, I know EXACTLY how you felt when you lost yours. Ours was a Black, and I'd love to get another one, but haven't been able to find any around here...and I'm kind of wavering on another 30 year commitment to a fish....

i just saw your beautiful huge pacu.. and i know you understand ..they are by far the best fish in personality alone that anyone could ever experience with a fish.. such a happy fish..waddles over to greet you..smiling as only a pacu can.. then playfully swimming away to show off.. love them ..and miss them greatly.. if i was starting over i would do it all again.. but i too have second thoughts because once you love them that way ..i don't know if replacing them could fill the void.. i feel like mine were special and special because it took time and patience and work to make them the way they were, yours was just incredible and i think 28 years is mind boggling.. what wonderful heart breaking memories you must have.

Absolutely, Liz!! He is actually the whole reason we got into fish-keeping....started him off in a 10 gallon...went to a 55 gallon...then a 180....on to a 410...and he was the entire reason we built the 3240 gallon tank! If we could find a small black or timbaqui again, I'd be awfully tempted to start growing another one.....just how hard is it to clean a tank with a walker? LOL!

haha i know exactly what your saying.. and i am going through this with my horses ..getting older and so are they and you hope that you will always be physically able to do it .. cannot even think about giving them up.. someday though maybe no choice.. take each day as it comes though..and if u find one and it makes you happy then why not...i saw one the other day..as i was looking at it my husband whispered we will come back and get it next week.. but when your in the truck driving away you start thinking huge tank, all the work and and and..older..we have enough now really.. but i still say maybe .. if he twists my arm you know i will :D

Please show us more pics of your tank.

Is it concrete with glass front? What size panels are they? Also what thickness of glass? I appreciate the info.

i want one i really want to buy one but i have yet to buy a tank

Great fish to keep but remember you need a large tank. Also all species in the "PACU" family of which there are several genera and more than 200 species are a schoaling fish and therefore do best when several are kept in a group.

So good luck getting your big tank and enjoy your pacu.
