My parents don't have anything against my hobby, but they won't allow me bigger tanks, indoor ponds or a terrarium.. It's awful :(

My parents don't care as long as its in my room and not on display but my problem lies with the floor support. Has to be a saltwater reef tank if it is to be displayed and needs to be mahogany stand and stuff and no equipment can show. Picky picky picky parents. No this, no that, that looks ugly, I hate oak, too much red, I don't like that color, the design on the stand is terrible, theirs a scratch on the bottom, needs more coral, too few fish, its too short, the stand is made of plywood, etc. And my parents despise aquarium built stands. Omg they look sooo cheap even the red sea stands are HIDEOUS. Its like they make em out of cardboard and plywood and scrap junkyard metal and then sell them for absolutely rediculous priced.

I don't even have 100% permission for those :( And they are small.. What really annoys me is that they won't allow me an indoor pond.. Simple to set up, cheap, etc.

My dad loves it as he was into koi and fancy goldfish back then. He also goes fishing alot too. He's just shocked how much it costs to run and how much maintenance has to be done to it (3 hrs each week on a 450 gallon tank). I don't live with my parents no more but my dad will even be more shocked when he see's my new 600 gallon tank lol...

Well u have to respect your parents point of view as it's their house. Running a monster tank isn't cheap and it can cause damage to the house in the long run. Even if a indoor pond is cheap to set up but cost of running it can cost a lot and u'll have humidity issues especially from a open top. I wouldn't blame your parents for not allowing it and say if a flood happens do u know how much water damage costs? If I was a parent I wouldn't allow my kid to set up a huge volume of water inside my house either. I know by experience by having my 450 gallon set up in my parents garage and molding the roof due to the humidity. When u move out then set one up so u can screw up your own place:) This isn't just towards u but to all the ppl who still lives with their parents whining about why they can't have a monster set up.

My mother doesn't like me wanting a bigger tank i told her my 55 gallon is going to need to be resilicone she say that fine then i try and tell her it might cost more then getting a new fish tank ( of couse i know it doesn't but she don't) and she still won't let me. But i do kow i can upgreade my 30gallon cause last chirsmas they got me a 45 cube and my mother doesn't like it so i told her about a 40 long that she does like. :evil_lol:

I'm 21 and don't live with my parents any more. My dad does keep fish but he thinks my love for the hobby is a waste. My mother just completely dislikes it. My little brother's father was a fish keeper also. She would always complain about us finding old tanks people thru away and bringing em home. Now I'm trying to start my own business with the hobby and she feels its a waste and I should go back to school instead. I agree with what another member said if your parents don't support your hobbies they aren't good parents. As the father of a infant boy I vow to support my son in what ever hobby he grows to like as he gets older.
