Parents.....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have to FIGHT for every little tank. So last year i got creative and "gave" my mother a new fish tank for Christmas. (which i care for). I hate not being able to keep large tanks however i am a student paying for everything except lodging and cannot afford to leave. Due to medical issues, my presence at home is desperately needed soooo, i am lobbying for a large tank. Hopefully it works.
Whenever my parental units complain about my tanks i reply "hey,...i could be wasting my money on alcohol" they, mutter and realize that i'm right.

My son and I are in this hobby together, in fact he was the one that told me about MFK...not everyone agrees on everything and that's no reason to put one persons viewpoint down, just because you don't agree. There's always common ground if everyone just listens, really listens to what is being said.....

Bill88, I believe you said your 19, if things are so wrong at home why don't you leave , start your own life.

My dad doesn't care, as long as the fish he has to look at (I have some in the computer room) are pretty, and the ugly ones are out of sight!! lol Also, as long as my tanks don't come crashing through my bedroom floor and into his room!! lol

My piranha (who is gorgeous) is in my bedroom, as are our 2 (one for my fiance and one for myself) greenspot puffers.

My Shortbodied con and my goldfish are in the office. He says that he can think of better things for us to spend our money on, but he doesn't complain about our fish at all.

Goldfish aren't all that bad....really. I used to have fish as a kid (I'm 19 now) and got out of them when my tank bombed out, and I lost everything. We didn't have fish AT ALL for a long time!! At least 13 years!!

When my step-sister and her kids moved in, I built a terrarium for some frogs they caught in the yard...I populated the pond with 6 small goldfish. we lost 3 that first night, and 2 within that week. The last one standing we kept, and named her Sk8r.

We put her in a 10 gallon with sand, and some minnows and an Indian Sun cat. We released the minnows to their lake, and lost the cat. We then put her in with a newt, and she did great!! We had a sydontis, and some other fish that we lost (still had Sk8r)

When we got our 75, we decided to get more goldfish to keep my locely girl company, and that's what got us back into fishkeeping!!

We now have 7 goldfish, a bullhead cat, 2 GSP, 1 RBP, and a shortbodied con.

Tell your parents to each they're own....and maybe go out of your way to get them some fancy goldies.....but don't knock goldies!!

As my friend Karajo told me, Goldfish can be MONSTERS too!!

Monster Earth Diggers.

bill88: If your parents want goldfish so much, tell them that they can buy the goldfish out of thier money, but warn them that the Dovii may not play nice. Lol.

I dont live with my parents but when my dad stops by and sees all my tanks he tells me to save my money and to stop wasting it. I just tell him go F%^$ off
My family bi+ch a lot about my fish hobby all the time. At times, I feel like doing what PMK did and I can understand what drove him to that point.:ROFL:It's like I do not like their old folgy hobbies but they do not see me bi+ching about it. All I ask is the same kind of respect for another person hobbies in return. Some parents are just too ignorant to understand and lack communication skills. Now that I graduated and making my own money I don't give a crap what they have to say about my hobbies because I have lost respect for them over the years. Elders need to realize that they cannot reverse the effect of scarring people with the things they said over the years.:irked:

im 18, 19 in january. My parents (who i still live with) are complete opposites when it comes to fish keeping. my dad loves it, he always had tanks and has always supported this. My mother on the other hand thinks its a waste of money and time but i remind her that i could be wasting my money on something worse, like drugs or alcohol.

Well...concidering the fact that I'll be 50 on the 29th....

I can honestly say that I don't CARE what they think of my hobby...

LOL

My kids on the other hand are split...half of them love it...the other half think We're both nuts...

My parents like them but don't like having lots of tanks, I'm allowed 1 at the top of the stairs (55) and two in the living room (my 220 and the anything upto 10' long).

My Mum always asks why I can't get nice colourful fish like neons. I'm going to change my 55 to a planted tank just for her with her selection of fish. It could get expensive, she likes discus but at least she'll get into it. I'll even get her to do WC's and feed them.

My Dad found out my Saratoga hates people and hates being looked at so now he just sits there looking at the 'toga watching him trying to find a place to hide. It seems cruel but the 'toga is starting to get use to people and Dad feeds it ever time. The 'toga has even stopped trying to take my fingers off and now begs for food, you just not allow to look at him.
