$45 gallon tough tote from home depot, you can bury it partially in the ground or build a wooden frame above ground with 2x4 and use $25 pond liner. Seems to risky with the galvanized steel tub that's way more expensive and takes quite a bit of time to "season".

I agree, but I think I like the galvanized steel look. I can stock it with plants and wait a month. So what? In the meantime, I can figure out what to get next

What are you using as test to verify the galvanized steel is no-longer toxic for fish? Or are you using fish to test the toxicity of the galvanized steel?

So, I went to home depot, and found a 4x2x2' Galvanized steel bin. We realized that Galvanized looks industrial, and we don't like the look very much, and it rusts. Sooooo, we found 41 gallon oak half wine barrels. Looking at those. Dad wants to get 2 of them lol
How about an old bathtub? Every DIY TV show seems to throw out at least one, and they come with side & bottom drain.
Often/usually very (VERY) heavy, but one might argue that implies stability
Re. plants: lotus & lilies. Get seeds online, choose your colours & have fun. Plus, they'll be edible in the fall.
Re. fish: paradise fish are quite low-temp durable and have quite a bit of colour from above with dappled sunlight. Hopefully too small for racoons & herons.
As noted previously, galvanizing zinc can be toxic. Can seal with epoxy.
