Freaking sad. Hate reading about these stories. I was always against guns. Very anti gun ownership. I just had a son. Now I want a gun. Funny how that works.

So what's the ideal choke on a home defense shotty? Tight? None?
Because all bad guys fallow the law and meth is sold in stores right?

Hello; The USA is fast moving toward the same conditions. Already a lot of poverty in my area. The impact of our national debt and the entitlement programs that cannot be paid for long term is not being addressed.
Hello; This is not an answer but may have something to do with it. I am reluctant to engage with any child any more. Seems back when I was a child any adult in my neighborhood might step in to help me and some did. During my teaching days things eventually progressed to the point of almost no physical contact. No hugs or pats on the shoulder or back or rubbing a head and such. I can recall adults having to chew me out for some thing I had done but with a friendly arm across my shoulder that helped me know they also cared.
Hello; pistols work for sure but as keeper87 says a shotgun does also. In some ways a shotgun may be less of a liability as the pellets might not go thru walls and such for the great distance like a pistol round can. Best to use what you are comfortable with and know how to operate. Were I to choose between a pistol I have not used much and a rifle I am very familiar with, the rifle is what I would pick up.
I have a not so clever friend who carries a pistol he has never fired. I keep telling him to get a couple hundred rounds and do some practice. How does he even know the thing will fire?
hello; Likely no choke on the short barrel shotguns. I think they must be a tad over 18 inches here and the ones I have seen do not have a choke. A 12 gauge with cowboy action loads is a combo that both keeps the recoil more manageable and is less likely to wound the folks in the next house. Have a few 00 buck a 04 buck around for serious work. Stay away from the 3 inch magnums ( at least I do anymore).

AWARENESS of all situations, I don't care how safe you think you are or how safe you think your kids are, they are never really safe in this world.
I don't really have a pref. tight is generally better, but if you have a home defense load in the weapon (buck and ball-the hybrid between buckshot and a slug) then anything center mass regardless of spread is going to stop whatever/whoever just kicked your door in guaranteed.
Hello;; Nobody wants to get shot with anything even a 22. The 22 is not so likely to stop a person or large animal right away, but if it is what you have use it.

Hello; Yes this. It's a mind set. Does not take any effort to be a victim. Few of us will be aware 100% of the time, at least I am not. I take naps or get too focused on a project around the house. Still need to be aware and make an effort. I have it easy over a parent as I only need to watch out for my self much of the time.
