What a lot of people don't get is that PETA isn't just against animal cruelty (come on, who isn't?) and in favor of vegetarianism. They take it as far as to say that not only should zoos, etc, be closed and release all animals, but no one (thats you and me)should keep any animals ever...as in no pets for anyone period. Even service animals like seeing-eye dogs should be used as such. To them, its the same as slavery and what we do to chickens before they end up on America's dinner table is comparable to what the Jewish community experienced during the Holocaust.

My personal stance is that, bottom line....animals aren't people. Its true that there's probably some people out there that deserve death more than any animal, but there's still a line. When it comes to blowing up buildings just to save a few lab rats, that's crossing the line. IMO, no animal life is worth more than a human one. I honestly don't think anyone in their right mind is really for animal cruelty.

If you're a vegan/vegetarian, fantastic...more power to ya. Just don't slash my tires or tell my kids I'm a murderer because you don't agree with my eating habits. To some of these extremist groups, this is almost a religion to them.

I can see most people here are not going to like PETA right off because they are against fish-keeping. That alone is probably enough to make them unpopular on a fish-keeping board.

I generally like PETA. My beliefs are a combination of AR and AW so that makes sense.
PETA is a large group of people with a diverse set of beliefs. They cannot possibly please everyone within the AR/AW community let alone the general public. That said, their main goal is AR as an organization, though they will sometimes support AW.
Sometimes their approaches and shock tactics are in very poor taste and sometimes there are extremists involved. Some of these things are to be expected when you have such a large diverse group.

On the bright side, I feel like they have brought awareness to some important issues. Without PETA , I feel some of these issues would never have become known to the public. They provide a valuable service by being an advocate for animals.
I've heard some say they do no help animals directly, well that's not true.
They help with neutering and spaying of companion animals, something I'd think few would be against as unwanted surplus companion animals only cost taxpayer money.

Whether or not you like PETA, I hope you keep an open mind and at least look at the material before saying "I hate PETA and I refuse to even look at their information".

I don't think it's the fact that they are against keeping pets that turns people off, it's the fact that they are headed by an ignorant, sociopathic extremist who uses her influence to brainwash their members in to thinking some of the things they do are "for the good of the animals." They openly break laws, distribute, what is IMO inappropriate, propaganda to children, and support terrorist organizations. They are a good group in theory, but they need a new leader and new mission. The fact that their leadership puts the rights of animals above those of humans is asinine. They need to divert their focus from animal liberation to improving the lives of the animals we keep or use. We are always going to keep, eat, experiment, etc with animals. They need to accept that and make sure that we do all those things humanely.

They did increase awareness to issues regarding animal rights and welfare, but beyond that, I think every protest they hold now further discredits their organization. Now I love animals and want the best for all of them, but if I'm hungry or if animals need to be used to develop medicines or improve the lives of humans in any way, then I wouldn't ever think twice about using them.

I am for PETA, but wish they did more for the animals then to hype the organization as they have done so many times in the past, and still do from time to time.
