$7-$7.50 an hour to answer all your questions about every animal carried by the store, any animal not carried by the store, find what ever item you are looking for and keep everything neat and clean during a 15-20 hour week that they get or are able to work because of school. Now are you willing to work for that kind of money for that limited amount of hours? Can you answer every fish, reptile, bird and small animal question that comes through from every so called expert that just wants to yank your chain or have an expert tell them what they want to hear?

:wall: this is not what im getting at
firstly why would i ask for infomation on a fish from a company that i am saying is crap???
exactly ! i dont !!
im talking about the 3 questions they ask me when i go in ! the 3 magic questions which decides what i can and cant have in the eyes of petsmart employees (because their training says so)
its irritating that they can be so pompas about it !
also i think i must ad that the reason i shop there is for the variety of fish my local store holds !
eg elephant noses, senegals, bala shark, oscars etc etc these arnt your run of te mill fish to be sold by some numpty !
i have read so many posts on here of people putting oscars in a 10g tank and wondering why they are getting so big ! i personally overheard another shop assistant selling an oscar saying that the fish was fine for a 2ft x 1ft tank for life ???
now do you het what im saying??
its beyond stupidity !!

Three questions for you.
1) Exactly how many PetSmarts do you have in England?
2) Do you really think that working in a "real" fish store or even more importantly, posting on this forum makes someone an expert.
3) Ever hear of the concepts of proper grammar, spelling and punctuation? Maybe then someone will "het what im saying"

1) not sure exactly but somewhere around 250
2) no it doesnt ! but a small amount of USEFULL knowlege is a must have to work in the trade.
3) i am very dyslexic (i have typed this post out in microsoft word just to make sure it is all spelled correctly just for you)
ps question 3 was a lame dig, come up with a decent side to your argument and keep it above the belt yeah ??

Guys, please calm down and stop the argument.:) Feel free to discuss without trying to reach the point of arguing and turning this into a personal attack.

Apologies to matt123 for personal attack. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are a pet peeve of mine. I just get tired of hearing that everyone at PetSmart is an idiot for whatever the current poster is whining about. If you read through this thread you will see that there was not a consensus by members as it whether those fish could be kept together.
I have worked hard to help my people gain as much knowledge as possible and tried to hire people who are passionate about animals. Doesn't always work, and I realize not every store feels the same way, but we try.
Have heard some outrageous statements made by experts at the LFS here.
As to why there is a set of specific guidelines look at any thread on here about compatibility of various fish. You will get a number of people who may tell you it's impossible, a number who say give it a try but watch and someone who will say they do it all the time. Who is right? That is why there are specific guidelines on the animals. Being universal in their care gives them the biggest chance for survival. Is always the best? No. But it is generally accepted guidelines that the majority agree with. And I don't mean the majority of nut cases on here. We all do things we are not supposed to. Most of us also are willing to go that extra mile or ten, just for the well being of the animals in our care. Not everyone is as conscientious, it's just a fish, hamster, bird, dog, whatever. In these circumstances general guidelines are the best or don't sell to anyone that doesn't agree with you.
Rant over, going to bed now.

i actually work at petsmart and after reading this I feel alittle bit offended because I actually am a fish keeper and know alot about fish. But I do understand where your coming from, since I've noticed that the vast majority of pet store employees(petco petsupermarket and other petsmarts)know little to nothing about fish.
Also our department also includes birds(parrots, parakeets, finches, doves canaries etc), reptiles(snakes, lizards, tortoises, turtles)amphibians, hermit crabs, and small animals(hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, guinea pigs). So you should keep in mind that the idiot bagging your fish might not of been hired for their fish expertise. And when your complaining that an employee isn't a pro on fish compatability, theres someone else on a bird forum probably complaining that the idiots at petsmart dont know the difference between a spice finch and a zebra finch.
