petsmart employees are lacking

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know what you are talking about NC. I work at a LFS myself and there some people that don't give two cents.
So those people just don't get fish. If they are going to put anything in a bowl, they don't get a fish from us (store policy).
If the customer wants something like a discus and does not have at least a 55 gallon tank (and know a little about discus), they don't get the fish. We are mean sometimes I guess, but we try to convince people to get something more suited for their tank instead of having an unhappy and stunted fish(store policy).
A lot of things (larger fish) are special order. Even oscars are special order since most people in my area think a 10 gallon can hold one. The customers that do want these things are more than happy to wait for one to arrive and love the fact that they are special ordering something haha.

In the end, the employee makes the final decision, but I understand that you have different store policies to follow than myself.

On the other hand, there are great customers that sometimes teach the employees. I may have been keeping fish for almost 2 decades, but there is always something new to learn and there is no way for someone to know everything about every fish.
One of the regulars with a 180 gallon tank taught me how to sex Sewellia lineolata the other day. I would not say it is complicated, but something I never looked up before.
Its always fun to learn something new in the hobby :)

definitely, but corporate policies are what they are, and money is money. all i can do is do my best to turn people away from the larger fish, and usually they take heed, but not always.

Best of luck :)
I am glad to find a good Petsmart employee.

One that probably agrees that sexing convict cichlids is possible :)

For my local PetSmarts the employees seem to be pretty good. It's the Petco and Walmarts that suck. Like anywhere though if the employee just doesn't have the knowledge and are rude I'd just leave and maybe try another time with a different employee.

I personally like my petsmart, the main reason I dont go there much anymore is the limited selection of both fish and carnivorous foods. One thing I have notices about mine, is that they are uber sensitive on betta aggression, and freak out when you buy more than one. Not a bad thing since a child might want to put 2 males in a small bowl or something, but I have overheard many times that they should be kept alone with no other fish because they will kill everything and that is simply not true. I also heard last time I was there an employee who was asked about breeding them telling an adult couple it was next to impossible to breed them, I laughed quietly and went about my business.

at least 3 times a week.. and it's just as often middle aged women 'because they can't choose what colors they want' as it is children.

you also wouldn't believe the amount of people who freak out when it's even SUGGESTED they get the fish a 1.5gallon setup with a small filter over a bowl, quote "20 dollars is way too much for any fish tank" - heard that one last week

$7.50 hr and it is not the job they want.
