petsmarts are just trying to protect their bottom dollar.... yes, i believe their employees care about the fish(how could they not, fish are awesome), but the overall policy sounds like a plan by the company's finance department to not have so many people claim their warranties on dead fish.
With that being said, I am feeling the frustration of the O.P. with the situation he went through. I guess I am lucky, for I have never had a problem friendly answering their questions. And their usual response is, "wow, that's a lot of tanks"

ive had similar issues buying feeder fish, they didnt want to sell cuz i was putting them in a piranha tank. another time they wouldnt sell me 50 feeders for my 500g but i got her to admit they had over 500 feeders in a 55... sometimes its just best to say nothing or to lie, because one lady wont sell fish unless she thinks you are a fit keeper and while i applaud her effort shes a moron and would sell 1 pacu for a 5g and not 5tetras for the same tank
As a large chain I suspect the employees are given those sort of questions as part of their training. I work in a lfs & am always surprised at how much & sometimes how little customers know about fish. Also selling neons at a $ is a loss leader & they probably didn`t want to run out too soon. It really comes down to the customer, I tell them about how big the fish will get, suitable tankmates, etc, but refuse to sell 10 neons at once? I don`t think so. As to feeder fish, that is exactly what we call them. I can`t sell an Oscar & later not feeder fish for him!

^^^^ lots of places like this. If your that unsatisfied though don't go to petsmart... Go to your local mom n pop shops usually they are more knowledgeable and usually won't question you about putting neons in a 125 lol

My Petsmart doesn't ask me anymore. They have some good employees.....and I think the last time anyone questioned my purchase was when I was buying angels and red zebras at the same time. They were within their right to ask what I was doing....IMO.
