How feeling so far about the sand substrate with ultima? How high is your intake off the bottom?

I’m going to paint my bottom black but still love the idea of sand substrate.
So far it’s great. The intake is about 8” or so off the bottom. No sand issues yet. Fingers crossed.

I got a lot done today.

Picked up stone, had some plants delivered, and decided to get inside the tank and scape.

As soon as my son went to bed, I got all my materials out and spent the next several hours scaping, planting, fertilizing, and adding my fish to this tank. Took my grow outs in the forty gallon and put them into the now-vacant 280.

I’ll take pics and more videos tomorrow after I install my lights. Just a few more checklist items to go.

I just looked up those lights and they’re still costly. I’m amazed how much quality lights cost. I’m going to suspend my finnex 24/7 over my tank. Hoping for enough light to see my fish and that’s about it. Praying that it will not cause algae. That setting used to cause algae in my 180.

You should be fine as long as you keep nutrient levels from getting too high.

What do you mean by nutrients? Nitrates, phosphates, etc? How do I keep them low other than water changes. I think my local water has a ton of nutrients.

Yes.

Keep them low and you’ll reduce your algae issue. If it’s in your tap, add plants that will compete with the algae.
