How good is ghost shrimp for a feeder for my rbp, sell them at my local store for really cheap. Just wondering if it would be a good diet change up every now and then?

I used to feed mine ghost shrimp. I don't see any problem with it. I'd recommend breeding your own if possible. Like fish, they can harbor parasites.

they are an ok food choice, but not very substantial for the money if you buy them a dozen at a time from the lfs. setting up a breeding colony in a 5 or 10 gallon tank would be a good investment, you can keep a bunch in your piranha tank to act as a clean up crew and a snack. all you need is a tank, sponge filter, and a tiny bit of food every couple days.

sponge filter? How do I go about getting that, setting it up, also do they just start breeding easily if i just buy a couple dozen and put them in a 20g, smallest tank i got laying around?

a sponge filter is essentially a sponge connected to a plastic tube, you run an air stone on airline tubing into the sponge filter and that helps to pull tank water into the sponge, it's a gentle way of filtering your tank, perfect for fish fry and baby shrimp. they should only cost a few bucks at your lfs and are extremely easy to set up, just gotta make sure the filter gets established with bacteria before adding the shrimp.

the shrimp will breed pretty easily as long as they have really clean water, just put a decent amount into your tank and wait about a month, you'll start noticing an increase in population... it may even take less time than that if you get some females that already have eggs. once your breeding population gets established, they start multiplying like crazy.

sorry to pester, but I am interested in setting this ghost breeding tank, think it would be good to have something that cleans up alot but still gets eatin on occasion. Could I get a little more info on how to set that sponge filter up.

if you really wanna breed shrimp, you should look into cherry shrimp, they cost a bit more initially, but they are great scavengers and algae eaters, you can also sell them for a couple bucks apiece when you need to thin out your colony.

the sponge filter is really easy to set up, you just need to go buy one from your lfs. you'll need the sponge filter and an air pump, usually you get some free airline tubing, but if not, buy some of that too. from there, you just connect the sponge filter to the air pump, drop the sponge filter into the tank, and plug the air pump in.... piece of cake.

hey joe, do you know if they require a heater. I wouldn't mind setting some up in a little tank I've got.

they mature and breed pretty quick at around 80f
