Piranha Tankmate Choices

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Howdy,

I am keeping my 10'' pirayas with Endlers. Has been working well for about one year now. They reproduce in the same rate that adult females are eaten. Adult males are too smalland survive in large numbers, which makes for quite the colorful tank. I also have red cherry shrimp, red crabs, and spotted raphel catfish in the same tank.

I think there are two keys to successful cohab:

  1. size difference (tiny fish/inverts with huge piranhas)
  2. activity difference (add strictly nocturnal fish and they'll survive 'cause your Ps sleep. Hint: do not add a moonlight...)

hey, i have a single r.b. piranha (about 8" long). I took him off a neighbour who could no longer take care of him. He lives happily with an 8" plecostamus, a 7" frontosa, and numerous convicts. (I started out with 6 convicts, and now have at least 60). I am constantly giving convicts away. My tank is 75 gallons. Piranha started out skiddish, but now comes to the surface at feeding time. I do not think this set-up would work with any more species or more than a single front and piranha :) These guys have been happy for 3 years now.

I Got 3 Piranha that aren't all I give them, they never eat everything that settles on bottom on the tank. I was wondering has anyone ever had success is housing them with 2 or more Lobster/Crayfish/Snails???

I never really considered snails as "cohabing" but I guess it is and in all 4 of my Piranha tanks reside breeding colonies of Assassin Snails, started out as 6 in a Pygo tank then breed enuff to be moved to numerous tanks thru out my house and are the primary food source for a Vampire Pleco. Each clutch produces about 30 snails.

i have a common pleco about 6 inches and a rtbarricuda about 5 inches living with my 4 inch gold spilo in a 55gal for a few months now..they all seem to be getting along

One thing I have seen people Keep Pirahnas with is the Exoden Paradoxus, never tried for myself but didnt see any problems between the fish although it was a group of Exoden and a group of Red Breasts

I have 2 RBP with 2 Oscars, 2 common plecos, 2 raphaels and 1 stripped knifefish

I started with the 2 P and 1 O in a 30 gal, they were all pretty small, I knew from the get go that I needed a bigger thank.

I moved to a 100 gal, by the time I moved them, they were already too big for the 30 gal, my girldfriend got me a baby Oscar, so I put in the 30 gal. Along with the KF.

I wanted to move the small O into the big tank, but I was afraid that the other oscar or the P's will rip it appart, so I waited until it was a bit bigger.

After about 3 months, I threw the smaller oscar in, I was ready to rescue him with a net, just in case. surprisingly even though he is 3 inch smaller than the pirahnas or the other oscar, he actually is the one that chases the RBP's around.

The plecos and the raphaels are pretty much ignored by everyone, and the kf, just hides all day under a piece of wood.

I'm pretty sure Piranha are illegal to keep here. Never seen one anywhere. Only Pacu.
