PLEASE HELP!!! MY AROWANA MAY BE DYING!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know they can get big, my mom is stubborn I just told her that the way she had been doing the changes were all wrong. She doesnt seem to understand the importance of knowledge before doing something. So now what should I do because the arowana is just lying on the bottom of the tank and I don't know whether to leave it so it could get some rest or wait for it to die. It's too late for me to do anything now.

wow taking out all the water is never good it takes out natural bacteria in the water that are good. it also isnt good for fish at ALL, a water change is only a portion of the water and should rarely be taking out more than 50%. BTW your aro probably didnt have enough oxygen and started to suffocate.

i both agree and disagree. i agree that for this fella doing big water changes is a recipe for disaster.

but for the experienced there is no problem with doing over 50% water changes

You really can't do anything else for it.

You my friend need to learn how to be a problem solver. If your not the problem solver then your just the problem.

Ok firstly, I'm doing this for my mom because the arowana has sentimental value to her. I have nothing to do with this, my mom bought the fish I'm just typing it in first person so didn't have to get in to details but you guys started to criticize so I just explained what is really happening. Just to clear the air, Im basically trying to gain some knowlegde so I can I can tell my mom what she's doing wrong. So should I just leave the fish be?

Follow the links I provided. You will gain knowledge.

You can do nothing more to help the fish in question. I wish him the best.

you can get an automatic syphoner at most fish stores or even walmart, stick the thick end in the fish tank and other side in your bucket and shake the end in your fish tank until water passes completely through. or if thats too expensive you could buy a hose and suck on one end until water comes out just be aware of getting a mouth full of fish water. swish the end in the tank through the gravel and you will c all the crap coming out. when you want it to stop simply pull the end in the tank out of the water. when you put water back in try to keep it close to the same temp as your water in your tank and as they said you need dechlorinator which has directions right on the bottle. also available at walmart or any pet store

no offense, but how do you buy TROPICAL FISH and not buy a heater. they are a bit more complex than goldfish. tell your mom that she needs guppies and swordtails. also, tell her to read a book on basic tropical fish keeping.

the aro may have sentimental value but you have to think. Can you afford to upgrade to a 300+ gallon tank? and can you afford to feed a 3 foot fish? If you can't, the best thing would be to get rid of it now cause once it gets a bit bigger they're near impossible to rehome.
