poison dart frogs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would think so...

I have a 48" x 18" @ 13" tall divided 50 gal as well as a standard 75 gal that I'm finishing up as plnted Vivs that are plumbed together with a common water feature... Mine will be a Dart Frog / Pygmy Chameleon tank...

Hey, just been reading and wanted to chime in. I kept Dendrobates years ago- tinctorus and azures- and my advice would be to focus on the design of your vivarium before even considering the frogs. There are soooo many ways to set up your tank and it took me a lot of trial and error before I got mine 'frog proof'. Also, I found that if I could get the plants to flourish, the frogs would do much better.
Now, years after the frogs, I still do the plants and feel as if I would have much more success with PDF's.
Side note: the fruit fly thing is a royal pain in the A!!! It's like growing brine shrimp that crawl over everything and get everywhere.:nilly: Even if you do flightless FF's, their winged cousins are sure to follow. They start off as maggots and, once they're flies, they crawl to freedom in the blink of an eye. EEK!!!

After reading all that goes into PDF's i don't think i could take care of them... culturing FF and all is just a royal Pain in the A by the sounds of things... plus i can't even find a place to buy earthworms in Hong Kong let alone trying to find FF cultures for a frog...

Oh well, i guess there goes me ever having a viv with PDF's....

i wouldnt handle them without gloves or something( personal reasoning) also if i were to keep anything toxic or along those lines i would take the extra step to make sure other pets (cats and dogs) cant ever get to them:) just because it would be a deadly snack for them

I don't know a thing about vivs really, but damn that tank in the Youtube link looked sweet... makes me almost one to set one up even if i'm not planning on keeping any frogs...

Wow some of the information here is awful. but yet some of it is absolutely correct

They are not toxic at all. Fruit flies do not always end up flying. Mixing is not a good idea. Inbreeding will get your oustest from the frogger community quicker that you can say hybrid. Mixing frogs causes agression issues. I see no need to mix to make yourself feel better but harm the frogs.

A 40 gal is way way too small to even think of mixing.

Most of my tincs, leucs, tricolors, etc are all in horizonal tanks. All of my pumilos and thumbnails are in vertical tanks.

Culturing fruit flies is actually pretty simple. I make a decent amount of cultures a week. The problem with fruit flies is eventually you will have a crash ( in 6 years it has happened twice) and crahses sucks. You go to feed the frogs and have nothing but dead flies. Most pet stores do not sell fruit flies and if they do they are a small fortune. There is always mail order but you better hope that you have fed your frogs well enough they can go with out food for a few day or more if it is the weekend.

Dont jump into dart frogs with out atleast a few months of research. I seen some of the questions you have asked and you are no where near ready.

And do not take the advice of a guy who owns/ runs a large petstore. he wants money and nothing else. If he tells you to mix that is because he will happily sell you new ones in a few months when the first ones die.

I am no expert by any means but I have been doing this for a few years. I might just know a thing or two.
