Warning, this is graphic, you don't see blood or hear anything, but it can still be upsetting. If you want to skip to the good part, go to about 4:18

First, I want to talk about the dog's body language. If she was being aggressive to THEM, she would have at least been tense, not laying there waiting for them to put a catch pole on her. The only time she was reactive at all, was once they'd put a catch pole on her, and then it wasn't aggression it was fear, and she was not coming AT them, but trying to run away or back out of the noose. She was practicing avoidance, which is what a dog does when they don't want to respond with aggression.

After she calmed down and accepted the pole, and thus held still, he shot her once on her body, not even the head. She lay down then, and actually made calming signals, like loosely wagging her tail, which a dog does when it's hurt or distressed to placate the one she's scared of. He then killed her with a shot to the head, after waiting thirty-six seconds.

They were called in because she supposedly acted threateningly to a child. The mother put her kid inside, went and chained the dog up and fed her while waiting for police... Obviously she was VICIOUS, if a stranger was able to handle her like that... :screwy:

Judging by her reaction to the men in the video, who were moving and acting very scared, I could have easily got her into a car or crate. Even a non-aggressive dog can act aggressive to a person who's showing fear like that, and she did not. I can bet that girl would have made someone a good companion.

Watch the video, then decide to sign the petition or not.

The 2 cops in Legrange, Missouri seemed to be a slight bit intimidated by the pitbull. They did not need to shoot the dog, but they seemed a tad bit scared. Once a noose was placed on the dog's neck, they had total control. They just did not seem to know how to handle the dog. I've seen animal control officers, armed with only a poll, do a much better job of capturing larger, stronger and more aggressive dogs. I think this is simply a matter of the officers not being well versed or trained in the area of dog capturing. If the dog truly did become aggressive with a child, the officers should've taken the dog away and put it down at their local facility in a more humane manner. I'm not going to sign a petition, because the dog was calm, but that does not mean it did not become aggressive with child and if it did become aggressive with a child, it would've had to be put down anyway.

I saw this yesterday...there is NO excuse for that, plain and simple. 90% of dogs struggle on the catch pole...even placid, leash trained ones, it's an unnatural feeling to them. They probably could have just led the dog into whatever carrier they had with the chain. Not to mention, this dog is not a pit bull, it is an American Bulldog cross. I am totally furious with this, and all the other stories that have come out in the past few years about cops shooting non aggressive dogs.

I delivered pizza for 3 years in a pretty iffy part of FL...yard dogs, dogs loose all the time. I have never stumbled across a dog I thought would "attack" me...you need to know how to act around them. I've rang the doorbell and had people stutter "Our dog didn't bite you?!" (ack). People are way more scary than their dogs.

Sorry there is no excuse for what those cops did imo. Thier excuse is digusting "We couldn't get him in the truck"..." The closest pound is 36miles away." So if that was a prisoner would it be ok to shoot him and let him suffer before you pop him in the head. Just because you could not get him in the car and the jail was 36miles away... This is just the typical lack of respect for animals that humans need to get over. Animals deserve more respect than humans, while we go and strip every corner of the planet of anything we want. And then when we encounter animals we kill them or leave them for dead. There really needs to be a lot of effort put into educating the new generations on animals so they don't pittle away what little of nature is left when they are our age. Simply put those cops need to go back to kindergarten and start over again. Petition Signed

The argument that the dog would be put down anyway.
Yeah, it may have been - if an owner wasn't found. But it would have been put down humanely. And an animal shelter won't euth a dog who's been said to be aggressive unless there is proof it has attacked or bitten. They will temperament test a dog before killing it, unless they are a run down Animal Control facility who doesn't TT, but goes off of how it acts in their care.

I find it hard to believe that the dog threatened this woman's child, and then she took the time to secure and feed it... Wish I could hear her side of the story.

Dog was an American Bulldog/mix, not a pit BTW.

As far as i could see there was absolutely nothing that would ever make me think that dog was aggressive. I've spent most of my life around dogs and that absolutely broke my heart!!

So how many signatures on the petition are ya shooting for? Is there a minimum number that will bring this dog back?

Not my petition. But it says they are trying to get 10k.

Trying to get some kind of punishment for this pointless act. Had anyone else done this to a non-threatening dog, they would be facing animal cruelty charges.

This is only my opinion, but I think officers who have to work out in public and deal with dogs from time to time, should have to learn about dog body language, and how to deal with a dog situation.

How many times have you hear of police just shooting a dog instead of dealing with it?

Yes, dogs are not people, they're animals, but they should be treated kindly when they are not posing a threat.
