That link was a big help you figure that the male needs more tank mates so he doesnt stress out one lone female. Do you think a long tank would be better than a shorter deep tank or would that matter.

I dont think that matters, as long as they have a lot of space, but a deeper tank is better in that way that you can plant a lot of plants and have a lot of roots and still have open areas in the front and back....

makes me want some..

You said to use a well planted tank I thought they were known for uprooting plants. What is your preffered food for them ours likes beef heart but don't feed it alot of it mostly gets pellets but have never seen it eat them but the thing is growing super fast. We got it at about 6 to 8 inches and now must be over a foot this only took about 4 months is that a normal growth rate?

I use a lot of plants like giant vallisinera and anubias, they are well rooted so they stay were i plant them, but more fragile plants are not to even think about.

I feed my polypterus with Hikari Cichlid Gold, salmonpellets, shrimps, live fish and fishfiléet chunks, and sometimes when i find grasshopper i put them in to. I think a varieted diet is the best diet.

I don´t know the growth rate but my biggest fry grow from 7cm to 8½cm in 9 days... But the delhezi i have hade for 3years only have grown like 1 or 2cm... I think that it depends on what spieces and the individuall fish.

What ever you are doing is working so would'nt change a thing I think I may have to try and find a mate for our ornate we also have a saddled bichir he is not as shy as the ornate but does'nt seem to have grown either so your probably right about the spieces making a difference. I'm not sure how big the ornates get but i've read some kinds can grow over 3 feet but you need around a 500 gallon tank and right now that is just a dream.

If you are going to get a mate for yours, try to get more them one, try to find a group of 4 or 5... If you are going to try to breed them :naughty:
I have read that ornates get around 70cm or so... My biggest is somewere between 45-50cm.
