yup the sen is 9", and i think it's pretty much food that's jammed. any ideas how to feed laxatives?

one of my previous senegals had this problem too. slowly i became bloated as it cant excret out its waste and passed on. mine wasnt due to gravel but suspected its some large or hard foods it took.

i was too late to treat mine. yours is still in a very early stage. can try some epson salt as advised. dewormers also act as a laxative. if it still feeds it will be great, try stuffing some of epsom salt or dewormer into its food like market shrimps. but be cautious not to overdose. probably a pinch will do for a 2" market shrimp.

I've heard of various reliefs for fecal compaction for fish in general, but bear in mind haven't tried them. Perhaps others can comment:

1) increasing the temperature w/ addition of salt (if nothing else will boost metabolism and ease stress of osmoregulation but it's supposed to somehow work on the blockage)
2) epsom salt
3) last resort, take him out, and while gently holding in a wet cloth put 2 drops of cod liver oil in his mouth, then don't feed for several days

Feeding peas is often recommended, but I've never seen my bichir take them.

Good luck, and hope your little fella recovers.

okay UPDATE. i've given him epsom twice now, and he's not crapped anything out yet. fed one two days ago, and one just now. now he's swimming everywhere and panicking, unlike the other bichirs and gars. is this a sign? or preparation to crap? haha

you're not supposed to feed him the epsom salts. . . you're supposed to dissolve them in the water. what exactly are you doing?

If you're feeding him the salt, STOP NOW. That will throw his osmotic balance all out of whack. Are the other fish eating the salts?
