No need to worry because he's only in there until I can get my planted tank up and the convicts are 1/4 of his size and the Texas are about an 1/8 so he'll be ok. I'd love to see his whole face be red as an adult. How's your fry doing?

Great thread:clap Just noticed your only about 20 miles away from me Cyberman as i'm not far from the A1/A19 junction. I got 2 FM's a couple of months ago & it's the first time i've had them but really enjoying them not sure if i've got a pair or they are both the same sex but the slightly smaller one hides away alot

Hey its cool to know someone on this site that lives near... It's hard to sex FMs at the size yours are... Feed them well and you might find out soon. Good luck and I hope you end up with a par :)

There have been recorded 7" FMs but 6" is the norm for a male.

A lot depends on the size of the tank and what you feed them on, aswell as how often you make water changes.... Anywhere from 3 to 6 years, maybe longer although having said that my biggest is home bred specimen is 5 inches and not even a year old. The breeders are 4 inches long and approx. 15 - 20 months old.

My current babies are now 4 months old and between 2inches and 2.5inches and their colors still haven't fully developed. This is interesting because even though pet shops sell firemouths at about that size with well developed coloration it suggests to me that its an age thing not size thing that determines color progress in Firemouths. Maybe mine are advanced in size compared to those shop Firemouths.
