Project "SRF" The quest for FIREMOUTH perfection

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They're fine for now. I have a spare tank ready. I just don't wanna put them in my 135 yet cause they get chased a lot. Once they settle I'll probably move them. Do you think I got a male and a female?

One is certainly male (the specimen with the caudal fin extensions, which is a very good quality) but I'm not 100% about the other one.... Looks male aswell... Can you get clearer pics. They are certainly above adverage in coloration. Love the extensions on the fins of the larger fish. Great find.

Heres two of my Females to show you... They tend to be smaller and more rounded with smaller heads and mouths.

I love meeki, I have a 7 year old pair. Male is 6.5" female is 5.25". I really enjoy them, they are considerd a beginer cichlid, but to anyone who has been in the hobby long enough to raise a pair into adulthood. They will know the amazing behaviour, coloration, size and aggresion that these fish are all about. They are stunning, I have always said, common for a reason. I like your male, I have never seen red on the body way up past the lateral line. Where are they from? What generation? Sorry for all the questions, meeki are by far one of my favorite cichlids.

You can see the 8" micropthalmus in the second picture, he is above the pair.

I heard about that.. don't recall where. They very with more red or more blue depending on collection point (but honestly, who's collecting meeki). My opinion calls for a strong balance of both colors. I really enjoy the blue spangling against the grey coloration. As well as strong red along the whole lower portion of the body. Its very pleasing to me. I like what the op is doing, although, I think its hard to "perfect" the species. But the idea of bringing the species back to having strong colors, good genes, and healthy shape is absolutly something that I love. I feel that with the thousands of fry I have produced from my pair, I have helped in this manner.

I actually have a good friend of mine who has been pestering me to spawn these guys again. I plan on doing it soon, and raising up a fair number of fry. I would be more then happy to swap some fry with the op, so as to keep blood lines of strong specimen, breeding together. I would like to take a handfull of my fry, and a handfull of each of his pairs fry, and spawning them together. And then letting genes pick the best traits of the now much more diverse genes. Just a thought.

stunning firemouths!! this makes me want to go with a firemouth pair in my 40 breeder my local fish store just got an order of 200 of them.maybe get 4 or 5 of them and then wait to see who pairs up.

Amazing big Firemouths fish_n_vw love the size and bulk and forehead coloration. I bought my FMs from a LFS who had imported them from a breeder in Czechoslovakia... These seemed to be redder than normal. So have you noticed an increase of Red coverage as your FMs as they got larger?

00rollins... I am very very interested to have details about this breeder whos supposed to have produced almost totally red FMs.... Love to see pics. Who else has seen or heard of them?
