Next project has started. The girlfriends birthday is coming up shortly. She wanted a bath tray. Since she is out of town this weekend, I decided to start the project. I picked up some stain, varnish, and an 8’x12”x12” rough cut pine board from Home Depot. I picked the board that had the most live edge remaining. Cost of the build around $30.
Started off by sanding the wood with 60 grit sandpaper. Progressed to 150 grit. I sanded the board until the natural grain started to appear. Unfortunately I didn’t sand far enough. I just finished applying the stain. Now I’ll wait an hour and stain the underside.
I died some rope to use as the handles for the tray. The rope was died with a mix of acetone and varathane based stain. I used acetone to thin the varathane stain. I then dropped the ropes into the mix and dapped any white spots with a sponge. I will leave them in the box for over a week to ensure they are completely dry
