Sucks to lose them but what made you think it wouldn't eat another gar?

You were worried a mouse got it? Mice steal your fish?

+1 that is a big size difference, just a fish being a fish imo

IME gars usually are not predatory towards other gar species at larger sizes. Little gars will eat anything they think will fit, including other gars. Once they get some size on them though I've found that they will ignore smaller gars, and not consider them as being food.
I have kept 6-8" gars with 16-18" ones without losing any to predation. With that said there can be other issues related to such a large size difference, such as the larger gars outcompeting the smaller ones. As with any potential combination some common sense is needed when deciding to place fish together. The individual temperments and behaviours have to be taken into account.
Sorry for your loss, man.
As I said before, I'm not surprised that particular tropical gar was the culprit based on their murderous nature while in their previous owner's aquarium(s). I think it would be a smart idea to move it to another aquarium before it starts systematically taking out the other smaller gars considering that it's killed at least three tankmates by now.
