proof gars are canibals

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so far i have been adding a fillet a day to see if that takes the edge off inbetween feeds an it is working. they had a nice big meal today. the fillet a day seems to keep the gars at bay.

Wow interesting thread. Nice looking fish everyone.

Scott, I didn't know you VATF had died. Did you document it and if you did, could you link me? I couldn't find it through a search

it got deleted due to hater spam. it went from a thread about a trial and fail to a hate on me thread due to a few members that seem to show up everytime i have a failed attempt at something. ill see if i still have a pic of the mix and the result. i put it up here. i do have some pic of all the gars taken last night in the media section. it sucks more because if it didnt mix and i saw some nipping by gars i was going to sell it.

i think that the smaller trop is the one that killed the vatf and the big one just found it.

all over you here about gar predation on smaller gars, but i dont recall ever seeing pictoral proof of it. thus why i took the pic and made the thread. i could have easily said " the smaller teop ate a small gar" and left it at that, but if people see pics they tend to believe it more then if you tell them over and over.

the size diff isnt as that big, i have mixed a greater size diff without issues. granted those were all with floridas but it is still possible. having said that i have mixed fish with issues.

i have always and will continue to be an open book on fish keeping. complete with all the ups and downs. that is how people can learn about the hobby. to many people do things in their tanks and dont say anything. then at random after someone else has a similar exp they have alot to say about how they knew it wasnt going to work. i am just doing my part.

-honestly this has been posted and mentioned many times...even basic literature talks about gar cannibalism. yes, it is usually in reference to YOY and juveniles, but i have posted here and there about issues with hybrids, gators, and in general larger gars attempting to take down smaller gars (often times killing them in the process).

to be frank, although we are talking about somewhat older gars, it looks like you didn't learn anything from the FLG vs CBG incident (or some others). the size discrepancy between the TPG and the FLG is huge, and Atractosteus in general tend to be more aggressive. even though they may not have acted this way in previous owner's tanks, you have to keep in mind that animals WILL react differently in a totally new environment.

i'm glad you can be transparent about this stuff, but try to exercise more conservative practices in the future. these sorts of things can be avoided by basic fish-keeping common sense. also, i think you'd be much more upset if it were a giant FLG eating your TPGs...let's not start considering some of these fishes merely disposable--

thanks for the reply solo. i ment i have not seen pics of this. i think in general people tend to have to see it to believe it.

i did learn from the flg vs cbg. this florida was 10". i have mixed this size diff with floridas in the past with 100% no issues. i am relitivly new to the atractosteus side of the gar world. i, givin the record of these 2 in ref to gar on gar issues in multipule tank settings, figured it would be ok. so far of all my personal gar experiences have been a success with the gar vs silver fish until these trops. i have had many aros with my gars and at some
smaller sizes without issue. that is the reason i though my vatf would be ok. i have heard from a few other members with payaras, dorados and others like that successfully mixed with gars.

it could have been avoided. i know it happened due to me wanting all my gars together. i am not veiwing some of the fish as disposible and i would be just as mad about the situation if it was a flg taking out a trop. i had a flg take out a cbg and felt just as mad as now. those were smaller fish, from mine and others exp a simmilar but different situation. believe me i am through taking chances. i raised both the flg from 2", i got the trops large. i am/ was more attached to those fish then to fish i got large. not to say i dont care about the large fish any less, but i am not saying " it was just a cheap flg." i was busy at work and didnt pay attention to the tank like i should have. if i was watching it as close as i normally do i may have seen something to help prevent it.

i should also make clear that we all (or at least most of us, i know I do) know you aren't intentionally wanting these fishes to eat each other, it's a matter of circumstances and planning. they are impressive fishes for sure, i definitely want them to be successfully maintained in your tank(s) like you do.

i should note that the very FIRST order of TPGs (back in 2005) i had a similar experience...i dropped in two of the "larger" specimens in Gar-den (I) and almost immediately the Croc II lunged and grabbed one of the new guys (and size was about 4-5" difference. I immediately had to lightly "smack" the aggressor on the head to get him to release the TPG, and promptly removed the two TPGs to another tank. trust me i would have lost my mind if i had lost that rare of fish on the first night! again, i worked for years to bring those fish into the US. with gars, nearly anything can happen. i have also learned that the croc II thinks it owns any garmada and will kill others while demonstrating that dominance.

anyway, good luck with the fishes in the future of course--
