I think this answers a debate that we are haing on another thread.

You cannot say that you do not have a problem with nitrates and then in the same reply that you do not test, how would you know?

My other point is that I think the reason that pups cannot tolerate your parental system is the nitrate is too much for them but the stronger adults have been in the water for a long time and therefore used to it. You may find that a large adult droppen in to your water could not handle it either due to the sudden change.

I bet if you did do some testing you might be a little surprised.

I was joking.... The nitrate issue comes up all the time. I have a hard time believing people with rays having ZERO Nitrates doing once a week water changes when I have to push almost 300 gallons A DAY through my system to maintain decent levels.

Nitrate problems with almost 300 gallons of fresh water flowing through? :grinno: I had nitrate issues before ther drip, not after.

My experience is irrelevant here. Breeding Motoros and Marbles are way different.

I wonder if the pup just has a birth defect. Just like other animals I would think they can be born with problems. Maybe you have a mentally handicapped ray? Possibly during birth he was starved of oxygen and cause brain damage or something? Just tossing out ideas.

this behavior has happened to me twice from pups that have went 1 month w out eating. i got them from a lfs to try and save them and they would never start eating even w perfectly healthy rays in the same tank.

my pups dont do good on my adult system because of the amount of fresh water being pumped in...

if he started eating, he might pull through

Makes perfect sense. I assumed ammo spikes from food but was never able to catch it with a test kit. Got frustrated and gave up trying to figure things out with a test kit. Low and behold it could be the amount of FW

Love it. Keep rays for years and still learn things on a regular basis. :D

The freshwater issue is really interesting, I saw on another thread that someone was doing 90% water changes weekly and that just seemed to me that he would be trying to constantly cycle the tank?

What do you think?

My new tank will be automated for water changes but I still do not want to do more than 50% per week at the max.

Well, after his come back the other night he is still physically struggling. We didn't see him eat yesterday, but there were plenty of ghost shrimp in there if he wanted to eat them over night. He isn't the least bit skinny. It is rather heartbreaking watching him. Anyone out there have a special needs ray??? We are hoping he will continue eating and maybe get strong enough to overcome this....beats all we've ever seen.

Went down this morning to feed....he didnt look to good. Still not eating and falling more on his back and having trouble getting back over. The other two are doing really well. Its ashame these guys cant talk and tell you whats wrong. All we can do is wait. Water levels are all still testing great.

And tonight he is upright and trying to catch ghost shirmp. He was knawing on some frozen krill too. He is starting to show signs of not eating in 2 days, but had more control over his disk tonight. We put a sponge over the inlet to slow the current in there. Water is still exchanging well, just not with as much force. Everytime we count him out he shows improvement. Other 2 are doing great and ready for new homes. I'm thinking we may just have a special needs motoro on our hands.

jeez this thread keeps getting my hopes up then back down lets keep them up this time. im glad he is showing improvement again and would love to see this little guy pull through.
