Putting together a 180gallon Tropheus Tank.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the compliments from you all.

I'm thinking of taking the Same Sandeply from the Skin and using some 1 1/8" x 9/16" Cap Molding being that I don't have a Table Saw to Really Do what I want....

The Doors will be cut about 7/8" to 1" larger than the opening, centered, making about 7/16" to 1/2" overhang around the parameter. So the cap molding will simply dress the door up a bit. If I had the proper tools I would use a router and table to saw in conjuction with the compound radial saw that I have... Maybe in the future I will be able to do something a bit more fancy...

Thanks! I got all of the sanding dust cleaned up from underneith the edges too! lol

P.S. I hope that you didn't mind me not agreeing with you on the tank missing something on the rigth side of it... Sometimes I don't always "deliver" my intended meaning as accurate as I wanted to.

its ok, Before finding out that their natural habitat doesnt have plants i was going to suggest a few plant back in that corner.

Well here is a little progress that I made on the trim for the stand. I haven't painted it yet, but it looks kind of cool the way that it is. I'm 95% sure that I'm going to paint it flat black as planned though....

I kind of went the fancy route on the trim. It's a little larger on the bottom and turned out pretty cool looking... I posted some pics of the door hardware as well. I will have four doors obviously. I should be able to get the doors started tomorrow.

I will tell you that I was stressing out BIG TIME! Tapping the Finishing nails into the stand. I was sweating bullets! I would start the nail on the ground, into the trim so that it would poke out of the back of it.... The I would finish lightly tapping it in... I felt like I was defusing a BOMB or something.....

looks really good! Hows the fx5 keeping up with the tank so far?

Thanks! Along with the Fluval 404 they're doing well. 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites and minimal Nitrates.... The water is not crystal clear yet, but it's only been a week... I just added some carbon yesterday to the 404. SO it has in consecutive order from bottom to top (being that's the way that the water flows in the can), Blue Bonded Filter Pad, White Poly pad, White poly pad + Carbon Bags then Polishing pads. The FX5 has Course Spoges on the outsides of the trays then from top to bottom (Flow Direction) Blue Bonded Filter Pads, White Poly pad, then White P)oly Pad with Bio-Media (Crushed Coral) underneith that...

Here is an update on the stand... It's almost done. I ahve 3 of the 4 doors on being that i ran out of Door trim. I need 2 more pieces totalling about 38"... The Hardware looks pretty good on it... I wasn't completely sure before hand.

Once I get the 4th door trimmed, fitted with hardware and hung, I will pull them and apit everything and then rehang them fro a finished stand...

I measured all dimensions for hanging these doors and the are pretty straight...

There is a lip on the prameter of the doors being that the Trim only hangs over the panel about 1/4" to 5/16"... Looks fine though. it may bother some but not me. It's not even visible unless the door is open. The Door handles came with screws that were to long, so I had to shorten them so that it was a tight fit. I still have to shorten the bottom ones on these pics. Although 1 Screw was enough to not let the handle even move once tightened...

The Hinges are pretty solid as well. I chose some that have a nice spring action to them so that the doors don't swing totally free. They basically keep the door closed or wide open.

Trim... It's all going to be painted black although I thought about adding a grey outline to a section of the trim to dress it up some. Kind of like a pin stripe around the whole trim.... Maybe not though. COuld be something that I could add at a later time.
