questions on galaxy ray tail shape..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is complete and utter bull crap. P14 are caught all over rio tapajos. Some have even found a spot where the fish are extra good.

Like these:

Andreas ochs compared the tail shape of his fish to those of stefanW (I think it was his fish). Both were the so called royal galaxy quality. One had a hook tail, the other dident. Both are pure bred P14´s.

The rays pictured must be captive bred or by braking the law by exporting them from brazil as p14 have been banned from export for many many years
Do you care to show and super spotty wild caught p14
P14 do get better with age so it is possible to have a over spotty older p14 normally males but all the young p14 with mega amount of spots have been produced from captive breeding and lots of in breeding as the p14 gene pool is so small with captive p14 that have been exported from brazil legally

The collection point of p14 is much much smaller than Leo I'm not talking about a few miles of river and yes you will get cut off sections of the river that have p14 and yes if that collection point is small the gene pool will also be smaller than larger sections of the river

Like I said p14 have been banned for years so yes the spot amount will get more and more with in breeding but not every p14 will have that many spots much with every animal you get good and bad from every litter and it's common sense that a breeder will show off his best stock and forget to post pictures of his standard fish

Tails get damaged so on tail alone is not a good way to confirm any ray is pure blood

People are not bothered if a ray is pure blood or not anymore its just the way a ray looks that justifies the price

As it can take a p14 a year + to turn totally black and can still carry on getting spots late in life it's hard to tell what it will turn out like
If it was black at a very young age I would be sceptical if it was pure blood

Those two are wild caught.

And no, they were/are collected all over rio tapajos.

Its true they look at bit brown. Thats due to stress. ;)

I took some better pics to show the difference with Leo tail and p14 tail

We all have our own opinions on p14 but I have not seen the wild caught very spotty p14 that's not to say they don't exist

I remember years ago rays that came from I think andras popped out a very strange looking p14 pup with the large and tiny spots that you pictured on your very spotty p14 and posted pics hear and everyone said it was a hybrid but I was convinced it was pure blood p14 because I had both parents

I will show the picture later when I can find it on my home pc

This ray way bred by me from andras p14 male and females from frank and Nico

When I posted pics people said it was a hybrid and it has the same big on small spots around the larger spots it also didn't have p14 tail which was also short like a Leo

The pics you posted are very nice but still just above average p14 the spot intensity is not as packed as some of the so called galaxy royal super spot that people are pumping out now

With p14 females mainly they may have loads of spots when small but as the rays grow the spots normally spread out
With males they seam to carry on getting more spots even as old as 4-5 years old and as males stay smaller the spots look more compact like my male

My females are a different story they are a lot bigger and the spots are spread more

I know p14 have been your passion for many many years and respect yours stefas and marks opinions

And my comments are just my opinions and to tell the truth I would never buy a ray from Asia as pure blood even if the seller had confirmed it was pure blood

i find it hard to believe that any ray over 12" still has the exact same tail that it had when it was born especially in a tank environment. i dont think any of mine have but i can still take pics and show similarities and differences.

also ... if marbles are "just motoro" then surely p14 are just "a version of leo" ?

i personally think that the classic leo is the most attractive and the many spots of the galaxy, AAA , p14 or superspot variants are just price tags and not so appealing. i realise however that this is not the general opinion of the hobby and is why the ones with lots of muddled or small or mishaped spots are more sought after.

each to their own.

If you look in ray books the Ross book p14 are classed as henlei as they are more similar to henlei than Leo

Leo p14 and henlei tails have the paddle or flag so are much stronger than the thin tip on a motoro which often gets snapped off in transit or breeding as motoro are more aggressive at breeding time

I have even been told of flower and tiger rays tails being snapped to cut down on shipping costs

Just remember guys, one or a few differing morphological traits doesn't make a species. Certainly not in the Potamotrygonidae family, where most recognized species show a highly polymorphic appearance.

P14s differ from leopoldis in other ways than just pattern.
