So 100w total is good for 1k gallons then? Thats easy to get.

I never have water temp changes with my water changes. I have 3 100 gallon tubs i fill as holding tanks with heaters to get the water up to temp and they all have seeded filters running on them so the water is ready to go. 72 dollars a piece for the tubs which are normally sold as horse water troughs and they are a solid composite material so no metal to rust or anything like that. I figured i couldnt go wrong for the price and with a sump pump from the local True Value to make my life easier why not lol.

I don't get the seeded filters, surely if there is no load on the water then the bacteria will die off, if there is chlorine being gassed off then that will be killing the bacteria in the seeded filter anyway and even if it did live what would it be doing for the water? I also think temp is not important, cold water excites rays, I think it triggers the rainy season effect on them, my male is often chasing the female after a water change.

T1 how many watts are you running and what is the flow rate?

Slowing it down to get the higher dosage is not the answer because now you're not pulling in the pathogen into the chamber. A minimum flow rate is require for each size of tank. From there you determine the Wattage and chamber design required. Not the other way around like you suggest.

When you buy a UV it states the max flow rate not a min flow

The only issue you get with a slower flow rate is it heats the water which is not a bad thing as the money you spend run a UV you safe on heating the tank

And what is your system's total volume?

tank 1000gal not sure about the sump as its packed so the media is out of the water no room for dirt to pass

if you think 100w is not enough i can easy add 2 more UV or 4 more and speed up the flow rate

even if i had 8 x 25w = 200w they would have still cost me less than $400

Great discussion. As long as we know what dosage we need and how to get there that is all that matters. Just make sure you know what dosage you're running.

i run mine like this 100w

i paid $40 per UV second hand

new sleeves in 2 of them as they were used on a marine tank and had lots of scale 2 sleeves $15 each

new UV tubes changed onces yearly as the arcadia tubes are long life and last 1 year other tubes only last 6 months $15 per tube

Don't you want to shoot for a flow that's gonna equal system volume once an hour?

Or does that not matter?

Also are those carbon filters down there on the bottom? Is that one of those HMA filters?
