RE-Post: As well as observations

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey, cepon, this isn't the species you're asking about, but I just wanted to throw this out there for ya.

S. rhombeus has actually been bred in zoos, in tanks over 500 gallons.

Also, a rhom. Demjor19 and Karajo have a 13" beauty, who amazed the three of us by laying eggs. The thread may even be on the board still, if I wasn't too lazy ATM to go look for it.

So if a Rhom can be put into breeding condition, and convinced to lay eggs, I'm sure there's a way to trigger brandtii's to follow suit. Good Luck!

EDIT:
I decided to attempt at being helpful.....so here's that thread I mentioned

Enjoy!

I know about the Zoo breeding but this is new, great info..........

I didn't realize my computer posted last time.. I meant to say:

There are alot of very knowledgeable people on MFK.. I just wish we had more People and topics to discuss.. I would like to thank everyone for all there input.. It is fun to try and crack open new techniques and doing stuff that hasnt been tried.. Theres just not alot of room for error when dealing with piranha.. they have to be the most unpredictable fish i have ever owned..

Thank you SUSHI.. That is amazing.. I contacted demjor19 and hopefully they will be contributing to this conversation as well.. i cant wait to find out what, if anything triggered that Rhom to lay.. thank you for bringing that up.. all information on all Serra breeding can be of use here..

in response to your pm,

when we got her last august she was in very bad condition, so i was forced to keep the water parameters pristine...which means water changes out the butt. i was also using 1 teaspoon/5 gallons of salt as a treatment for her injuries. water temp was around 78-80. i have tried everything to recreate her previous conditions with no more success. the only factor i have not tried again was the salt. possibly the salt played a roll? i am planning on trying a few other tests soon, to see if i can get her to lay again. if i figure out how to get her to lay eggs again, we are going to try breeding her. i have a few ideas if this occurs. one step at a time though.

all i know is i have half of the puzzle...a nice proven female! :D:grinno:

Dem maybe i'll take your rhomb and try to breed with my rhomb in a 500g or a pond?

having a rhom lay eggs is awesome, but the real challenge is getting two rhoms to not only not kill each other, but to somehow make them comfortable enough to breed with each other.

i would only attempt breeding through an egg crate divider with strategically placed powerheads to assist with the fertilization process. it's a long shot, but could work...
